Dead leaves were gathered. A narrow stone walkway curved toward the front door.

But something about it felt staged.

There were no gardening gloves left on a step.

No bicycle.

No package waiting by the entrance.

No children’s toys, though Mary Lou had never told me whether she had children.

No wind chime.

No chair.

Nothing suggested that anyone ever lingered outside.

I climbed the short steps and pressed the doorbell.

A soft chime sounded inside.

I waited.

No movement.

I pressed it again.

“Mary?”

Nothing.

My breath appeared in the cold air.

I pulled out my phone and called her number.

The call rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Voicemail.

I looked through the narrow glass panel beside the door.

The hallway beyond was dim.

“Mary Lou?”

Still nothing.

I should have returned to the gate.

I should have found a hotel and tried again later.

Instead, I touched the door handle.

It turned.

I froze.

The front door was unlocked too.

Every instinct told me not to enter.

Another instinct was stronger.

I pushed the door open several inches.

“Mary?”

The house answered with silence.

I stepped inside.

Warm air touched my face.

The heating was on.

So someone lived there.

I left my suitcase just inside the entrance and closed the door behind me.

At first glance, the living room looked elegant.

Neutral furniture.

Pale walls.

A polished floor.

Everything carefully placed.

Then I noticed what was missing.

There were no photographs.

Not one.

No wedding portrait.

No framed vacation picture.

No old family photograph.

No image of Mary Lou at all.

A small table stood near the window with flowers arranged in a ceramic vase.

I touched one petal.

Plastic.

The room smelled of nothing.

Not coffee.

Not cooking.

Not perfume.

Not dust.

Nothing.

It was the smell of a place cleaned more often than it was inhabited.

I walked farther inside.

“Kang Jun?”

Saying his name aloud felt strange.

I had not spoken directly to my son-in-law in years.

No answer came.

The kitchen was spotless.

The counters were empty except for an electric kettle.

I opened the refrigerator.

Water.

Two sealed containers.

A few eggs.

Half a piece of fruit beginning to shrivel.

No sauces crowding shelves.

No leftovers.

No food that suggested two people shared meals there.

I closed the refrigerator slowly.

My unease sharpened.

Perhaps Mary Lou and Kang Jun traveled constantly.

Perhaps they ate out.

Perhaps they used another home.

Explanations still existed.

But they had begun feeling like objects I was desperately placing between myself and what I could see.

I returned to the living room and noticed a coat hanging near the entrance.

Gray.

Women’s.

Only one pair of shoes sat beside the wall.

Women’s shoes.

I searched the lower shelf.

Nothing else.

My pulse quickened.

“Mary Lou?”

I heard a faint mechanical hum from somewhere upstairs.

Heating, probably.

I looked toward the staircase.

Going up felt invasive.

It also felt unavoidable.

I climbed.

Each step seemed louder than the last.

At the top was a narrow hallway with three doors.

The first opened into a bedroom.

A single bed.

That was what struck me first.

Not a large bed shared by a married couple.

One narrow bed.

The blanket had been smoothed with almost military precision.

A wardrobe stood against the wall.

I hesitated before opening it.

Then I thought of twelve years.

I pulled the door aside.

Women’s clothes.

Dresses.

Sweaters.

Coats.

Nothing belonging to a man.

Not one shirt.

Not one tie.

Not one pair of trousers.

I searched the drawers.

Underwear and socks.

Mary Lou’s size.

I sat briefly on the edge of the bed because my knees had become weak.

Where was Kang Jun?

Divorce entered my mind.

Had their marriage ended years ago?

Maybe Mary Lou had hidden it out of shame.

That would explain his absence.

It might even explain why she avoided coming home.

Yet it did not explain the money.

I stood and opened the second door.

An office.

Desk.

Computer monitor.

Filing cabinet.

The room felt rarely used.

No family photographs.

No coffee cup.

No handwritten notes pinned to a board.

I opened a desk drawer.

Empty.

The second contained blank envelopes.

The third was locked.

I left it alone.

A thin layer of dust rested behind the monitor.

Whatever work Mary Lou did, she did not seem to do much of it here.

The third door stood at the far end of the hallway.

It was closed.

Unlike the others, it had a lock.

I touched the handle.

It turned.

The lock had not been engaged.

The door opened inward.

For several seconds, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.

Boxes.

Dozens of them.

Some were cardboard, others heavier storage containers.

They were stacked along the walls, leaving a narrow path through the middle of the room.

One box near the front stood open.

Inside were bundles wrapped in paper bands.

Money.

I stepped closer.

Dollars.

Stacks upon stacks of American currency.

My mouth went dry.

I reached down and touched one bundle.

Real paper.

Real notes.

More money than I could estimate.

Certainly more than eighty thousand dollars.

Far more.

I backed away.

“What have you done?” I whispered.

The question sounded ugly the moment it left my mouth.

I did not know whether I meant Mary Lou.

Kang Jun.

Or myself.

I examined another box.

More cash.

A third.

Cash again.

My pulse thudded in my ears.

Nobody kept legitimate wealth like this.

Not this amount.

Not hidden in boxes.

The annual transfers changed shape in my mind.

Eighty thousand dollars.

Every year.

Had I been receiving stolen money?

Criminal money?

Had Mary Lou involved herself in something she could not admit?

I felt suddenly nauseated.

I crossed to the window and pulled the curtain aside just enough to look into the street.

No one.

A black sedan was parked farther down, but I could not tell whether anyone was inside.

I released the curtain immediately.

My phone was in my coat pocket.

I considered calling the police.

Then stopped.

What would I say?

I was an American tourist who had entered my daughter’s unlocked home and found cash?

I did not know whether Mary Lou was in danger or causing it.

I did not even know where she was.

I searched the room more carefully.

Most boxes contained money.

A few were sealed.

Behind one stack near the wall, something metallic caught the light.

A vent.

Nothing unusual.

Yet the carpet directly beneath it had a narrow indentation, as if the panel had been removed repeatedly.

I crouched.

Before I could examine it, a sound came from downstairs.

The front door.

Opening.

Every muscle in my body locked.

A bag rustled.

Then a woman spoke quickly in Korean.

Her voice was lower than I remembered.

But I knew it.

I stood so fast that dizziness struck me.

“Mary Lou?”

Silence.

The grocery bag downstairs hit the floor.

Something rolled across the wood.

Footsteps approached the staircase.

I walked into the hallway.

My hand found the railing.

Then my daughter appeared below me.

For twelve years, I had imagined this reunion.

In some versions she screamed with joy.

In others she ran toward me.

Sometimes I slapped her before hugging her.

Sometimes neither of us could speak.

Reality looked nothing like any of those scenes.

Mary Lou stood at the bottom of the stairs wearing a plain gray coat.

Her hair was pinned severely behind her head.

She was thinner than on video.

Much thinner.

For one suspended second, she stared at me as though I had stepped out of a grave.

“Mom?”

My throat tightened.

I almost laughed because hearing that word in the same room felt impossible.

“Mary.”

Her eyes filled instantly.

Then they moved.

Not to my suitcase.

Not to my face.

Past me.

Toward the open door behind my shoulder.

Toward the room full of cash.

All color disappeared from her face.

“You went in there.”

It was not a question.

I descended one step.

“What is happening?”

She rushed forward.

“Close the door.”

“Mary Lou—”

“Please.”

The fear in her voice stopped me.

I turned and pulled the money-room door shut.

When I faced her again, she was already climbing the stairs.

Her hands were trembling violently.

She reached me and grabbed both my arms.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to see my
