everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause evidence is cumulative. Remove enough pieces and doubt returns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was what had happened to Mom in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>A case built from selective evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Now Bell intended to subtract truth until prosecution became difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou killed Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRay killed Ernest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ordered him later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are Ernest\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hit differently coming from him.<\/p>\n<p>Not slipped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father had the same talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReducing complicated realities to moral statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike murder being wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Halvorsen stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>Bell raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cErnest benefited from the shop for mortgage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Dad had suspected more than he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>That possibility hurt.<\/p>\n<p>It did not excuse murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLedger E.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell said it confidently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou removed the tube before federal teams completed intake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>He had another source.<\/p>\n<p>Or Halvorsen had seen the recovery chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Vega kept it off the central evidence system because she suspected a leak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>But I did not know where it had gone after.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why ask four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tunnel 24.<\/p>\n<p>My heart tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had turned hiding evidence into a game for a toddler.<\/p>\n<p>Or he had repeated codes around him without realizing how deeply they stuck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat blue door?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because everyone treated him as irrelevant, he is the only witness who survived six years untouched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell understood Matthew better than the people who loved him had.<\/p>\n<p>That realization sickened me.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew whispered, \u201cBlue door.
