down.

The entire case began looking different.

Not because new facts had replaced old ones.

Because somebody had arranged the old facts into the only story investigators told police the marriage had been troubled.

Once that story existed, everything pointing elsewhere had become inconvenient.

Vega’s phone rang again.

The investigators had found something behind the wardrobe.

A loose panel.

Inside was another small compartment.

The photograph they sent showed an old handheld recorder and a plastic bag loved hiding things in stuffed animals.”

That was true.

As a toddler, Matthew stuffed crackers, toy cars and coins into every opening he could find.

Dad used to joke that the boy was a squirrel.

Perhaps Dad had hidden the key there.

Perhaps Ray had found the bear without realizing what it contained.

One tiny oversight.

Six years later, it had opened the drawer.

Vega returned.

Her expression told us something had changed.

“Mrs. Mendoza, the stay has been extended indefinitely pending an evidentiary hearing.”

Mom closed her eyes.

I gripped the table.

Not freedom.

But not death.

For tonight, that was enough.

Then Vega looked at Ray.

“Mr. Mendoza, investigators would like to speak with you concerning the homicide of Ernest Mendoza, evidence tampering and financial crimes associated with Mendoza
