Throughout my childhood, Ray could walk into an argument and make everyone question who had started it. He could turn anger into wounded dignity in seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Now he looked at me as if I had betrayed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were seventeen, Valerie. Your father had just been murdered. You were hysterical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI arrived after Teresa called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never called you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Ray\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t remember half that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warden stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mendoza, sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not answering questions without counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t answer them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray remained standing.<\/p>\n<p>The warden\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you are not leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clock read 6:24.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-six minutes.<\/p>\n<p>That was what remained of my mother\u2019s life according to the execution order.<\/p>\n<p>Escobedo pulled the warden aside. They spoke in low, urgent voices. I caught pieces: new eyewitness, minor, coercion, emergency judicial review.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was watching Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>He had finally crossed the room to her.<\/p>\n<p>She could not properly embrace him because of the restraints, so she bent awkwardly and rested her cheek against his hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did the right thing,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should\u2019ve told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were a baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew shook his head fiercely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he\u2019d put Valerie in the pit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat pit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew looked toward Ray.<\/p>\n<p>Ray said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat pit, Matthew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe place Bruno went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruno.<\/p>\n<p>Our dog.<\/p>\n<p>He had disappeared shortly before Dad\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had spent days searching. He drove through neighborhoods calling Bruno\u2019s name from his truck. Matthew had cried until he made himself sick.<\/p>\n<p>Ray bought him the blue stuffed bear afterward.<\/p>\n<p>The one Matthew was holding now.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Uncle Ray tell you about Bruno?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew\u2019s lower lip trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Bruno went somewhere because he didn\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you threaten him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew clutched Mom tighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe put his hand over my mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if I told anybody what I saw, Valerie would disappear too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ray.<\/p>\n<p>Six years.<\/p>\n<p>For six years I had thought I was Matthew\u2019s protector.<\/p>\n<p>I had worked nights at a pharmacy when money was tight. I had learned how to cook three meals he would actually eat. I had sat beside him through fevers, school conferences and nightmares.<\/p>\n<p>And all that time, he had believed silence was protecting me.<\/p>\n<p>The warden returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m requesting an immediate judicial stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot stop a lawful execution because an eight-year-old suddenly remembers something from when he was two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warden looked directly at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can delay movement to the chamber while potentially exculpatory evidence is reported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll lose your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen somebody can explain why they fired me for refusing to execute a woman while a witness was accusing another man of the murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray stopped talking.<\/p>\n<p>The warden turned to an officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet the duty prosecutor. Have a child-services interviewer brought in. We need this statement recorded correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre they still going to kill Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stroked his cheek with the back of her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen to me. Whatever happens, you tell them the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing else is your responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I turned away because I could not bear the tenderness of it.<\/p>\n<p>My mother was preparing an eight-year-old child to tell the truth even if the truth arrived too late to save her.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the glass, officers moved through the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Six years earlier, detectives had moved through our house with that same institutional purpose.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered sitting wrapped in a blanket while Ray spoke to one of them.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered his hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered him telling me Mom had \u201csnapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then I remembered something else.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer calling Ray by his first name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mr. Mendoza.<\/p>\n<p>Ray.<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the first officer at our house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Ray\u2019s expression changed almost imperceptibly.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the wall.<\/p>\n<p>My mother answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficer Salazar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name meant nothing for one second.<\/p>\n<p>Then it did.<\/p>\n<p>Salazar had attended Dad\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>He had stood beside Ray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew him,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ray shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf the town knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou played cards with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The duty prosecutor arrived at 6:31.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Marisol Vega. She entered carrying a laptop and legal pad, followed by a woman who introduced herself as a child-interview specialist.<\/p>\n<p>Vega listened while the warden summarized what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression became increasingly serious.<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned to Ray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mendoza, I suggest you remain silent until counsel arrives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once,\u201d Mom murmured, \u201cwe agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega asked Matthew whether he would speak with the interviewer.<\/p>\n<p>He refused unless Mom stayed nearby.<\/p>\n<p>A compromise was arranged. He would be interviewed in the adjoining room with the door partly open.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, Matthew handed me the stuffed bear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHold him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then I felt something hard inside it.<\/p>\n<p>Not stuffing.<\/p>\n<p>Metal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew looked puzzled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed the bear again.<\/p>\n<p>There was definitely an object inside.<\/p>\n<p>The stitching along its back had been opened and resewn.<\/p>\n<p>Ray saw me notice.<\/p>\n<p>His face lost its color.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the bear he had given Matthew six years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>There was a small seam beneath the fabric.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it apart with my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Something dropped onto the metal table.<\/p>\n<p>A brass key.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Ray whispered one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=16907\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Key Hidden Inside Matthew\u2019s Childhood Toy Opened a Room My Uncle Had Kept Locked Since the Night Dad Died<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ray recovered quickly.
