Luna stared at Victor as though she had stopped understanding language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key isn\u2019t with Naomi,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would someone attack her looking for it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cBecause they believe she knows where you keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna pulled out her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Victor stopped her. \u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUse mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour communications may be monitored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence seemed to make the entire situation more real. Cameras in the penthouse had been invasive. The broken office had been threatening. But Naomi being struck unconscious in the company parking garage meant someone had crossed the line from surveillance into violence.<\/p>\n<p>Luna took Victor\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen her hands shake that badly.<\/p>\n<p>He gave us what little information he had while she waited for the hospital operator. Naomi had left Sterling headquarters after an internal security meeting. She had reached the lower garage when someone approached her from behind. There were no witnesses. The nearest camera had been turned toward a concrete pillar for seven minutes. A security officer found her on the ground beside her car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven minutes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Victor nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame kind of outage as the break-in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably the same person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr the same access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna turned away as someone answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaomi Chen. He had vanished again. There was a car that had fled when we arrived, an unfinished warning on his phone, and a notebook that might prove Derek lied about the night Richard died.<\/p>\n<p>But Naomi was in a hospital because of us.<\/p>\n<p>Because of Box 314.<\/p>\n<p>Because someone believed the key mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Luna said quietly, \u201cWe can leave Samira here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whoever was watching the motel now knows we found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Thomas may return after we leave. Or whoever is following him may.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the empty room.<\/p>\n<p>Part of me wanted to stay.<\/p>\n<p>That part was nine years old.<\/p>\n<p>It believed my father might still walk through the door if I waited long enough.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna searched my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the most honest answer I had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Naomi shouldn\u2019t be paying for secrets she didn\u2019t choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>We drove back through the night.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody slept.<\/p>\n<p>Victor arranged for a second team to remain near the motel and watch the diner. It made her feel unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s why they attacked her,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because she knew where the key was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody thinks Richard told her more than he told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen they\u2019ll try again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor, from the front passenger seat, said, \u201cNot if we prevent it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna stared out the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t prevent this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>At four-thirty in the morning, we reached Denver.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital smelled of disinfectant and burnt coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi looked smaller in the bed than she ever had behind her immaculate executive desk. A bandage covered part of her forehead. Purple bruising had begun along her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>When Luna entered, Naomi tried to sit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBossy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re surprised?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna moved to the bed.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment she seemed unsure what to do.<\/p>\n<p>Then she took Naomi\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis happened because of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaomi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis happened because some lunatic hit me with what felt like a brick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor stood near the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the attacker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything useful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMale. Maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t speak much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi closed her eyes, replaying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the Sterling key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor exchanged a look with Luna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExact words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot vault key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Sterling key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was different.<\/p>\n<p>I felt it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he might not mean Box 314.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he meant the frame key because of yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut maybe he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor asked, \u201cWhat happened next?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Richard had trusted the wrong woman before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what he said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExact phrasing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard trusted the wrong woman before.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe someone else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he hit me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna\u2019s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi touched the bandage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next thing I remember is Garrett from night security kneeling over me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he take anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy purse was open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWallet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess badge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>She reached instinctively toward the bedside table.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy badge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s posture sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had it when you left the office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid security recover it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He immediately called.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty seconds later his expression confirmed the answer.<\/p>\n<p>No badge.<\/p>\n<p>Luna stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe shut down every credential connected to Naomi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor was already doing it.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi said, \u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy badge doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives access to three Sterling floors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at Luna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives access to your father\u2019s old archive room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat archive room?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Luna stared at Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt mostly is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Richard died, records were transferred or destroyed. But there\u2019s one locked cabinet nobody ever catalogued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father told me not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The connection we had wondered about.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had trusted Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>Luna\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two weeks before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me that if anyone ever came asking about \u2018the Sterling key,\u2019 I was not to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have known that phrase for three years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what it meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe specifically told me not to tell anyone unless the phrase came up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt came up yesterday when we found the vault key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You found a numbered key. Nobody called it the Sterling key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna turned away, furious.<\/p>\n<p>I understood both sides.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had designed secrecy like a maze.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone carried one piece.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew enough to see the whole structure.<\/p>\n<p>Victor said, \u201cWhere is the archive room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSublevel two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Derek have access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe. Luna. Building security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now whoever took your badge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Victor was already speaking into his phone when Luna headed for the door.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been awake all night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo has whoever attacked Naomi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an argument for becoming less cautious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped so abruptly I nearly walked into her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father left a locked cabinet. Someone assaulted my assistant to reach it. I am not waiting until morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back toward Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>She was watching us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re both terrible at being married,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Luna stared.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi managed a weak smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou argue like people who care and negotiate like lawyers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Luna did not.<\/p>\n<p>But she squeezed Naomi\u2019s shoulder before leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Sterling headquarters was nearly empty at six.<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s security team met us in the underground garage.<\/p>\n<p>The sight of the place where Naomi had been attacked changed Luna immediately. Her steps slowed. She looked toward the concrete beside Naomi\u2019s assigned parking space.<\/p>\n<p>A small dark stain remained.<\/p>\n<p>Blood.<\/p>\n<p>Luna stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I stood beside her without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Then she kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>The archive room was behind an unmarked steel door on sublevel two.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi\u2019s stolen badge had been used at 2:14 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever attacked her had come here almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The security camera outside the door showed static from 2:11 until 2:23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame pattern,\u201d Victor said.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, rows of shelving held old tax records, client contracts, campaign files, and boxes labeled by year.<\/p>\n<p>At the back stood a gray cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Its door hung open.<\/p>\n<p>Luna crossed the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it forced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor examined the lock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElectronic plus mechanical override.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaomi\u2019s badge handled the electronic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the mechanical?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sterling key.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet was nearly empty.<\/p>\n<p>One shelf remained dusty except for a clean rectangular space where something had recently been removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Luna shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi had not known either.<\/p>\n<p>Victor crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind the cabinet lay a torn corner of an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted it with forceps.<\/p>\n<p>Three handwritten letters were visible.<\/p>\n<p>BEN.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Victor found another piece beneath the shelf.<\/p>\n<p>A date.<\/p>\n<p>The year my father disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet had contained something connected to Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>And somebody had removed it less than four hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Luna stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cNot entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever took it needed Naomi\u2019s badge and another key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich means the mechanical key had to come from somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess logs for physical-key storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called security.<\/p>\n<p>The answer arrived five minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Sterling kept legacy mechanical keys in a restricted safe on the executive floor.<\/p>\n<p>Only three people had authorization to sign them out.<\/p>\n<p>Luna.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>And one board officer designated under Richard\u2019s old security protocol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d Luna asked.<\/p>\n<p>Victor read the name.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luna stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A text.<\/p>\n<p>No photograph this time.<\/p>\n<p>Just a message.<\/p>\n<p>You are asking the wrong Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Luna read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>A second message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Your father trusted Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Richard trusted Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Ask what happened the night Thomas ran.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=16861\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Eleanor Finally Told Us What Happened the Night My Father Disappeared, and Her Confession Changed How Luna Saw Her Own Family<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For nearly ten seconds after Victor said the words, nobody moved.
