sleeping.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll try again.”

“Probably.”

Her jaw tightened.

I realized something.

“He expects us to overperform.”

“What?”

“If we suddenly become affectionate every time he enters, he knows it’s theater.”

Luna looked at me.

“So?”

“So we stop reacting to him.”

“How?”

“We behave normally.”

“Our normal involves separate rooms and contractual boundaries.”

“Then we need a new normal.”

I heard the sentence after I said it.

So did she.

Neither of us spoke for a moment.

“What are you suggesting?” she asked.

“I don’t know yet.”

“That is reassuring.”

The next morning, breakfast was held on the covered terrace.

Rain misted the valley.

Derek watched us constantly while pretending not to.

So I poured Luna coffee without asking.

She passed me the butter.

I stole half her toast.

She kicked me under the table.

I whispered, “That seemed real.”

“It was.”

Eleanor watched with obvious amusement.

Derek did not.

After breakfast, everyone scattered.

Luna and I walked toward the stables.

The wet gravel crunched beneath our shoes.

“This is working,” I said.

“What?”

“He hates not knowing.”

“So do I.”

“You married the wrong employee.”

She stopped near an old stone wall.

“I mean it.”

Her voice had changed.

“What?”

“I hate not knowing what happens next.”

“That describes most of life.”

“I have spent years eliminating uncertainty.”

“How is that going?”

She looked back toward the house.

“Poorly.”

I leaned against the wall.

“You can’t control Derek.”

“No.”

“You can control what he sees.”

“For now.”

“And you can decide what parts of your life belong to him.”

Her eyes moved to mine.

“He will keep digging.”

“I know.”

“He’ll find things about you.”

“There are not many interesting things to find.”

“He may invent them.”

“Then we deal with that.”

“You say ‘we’ easily.”

The observation caught me.

“So do you.”

A breeze moved damp strands of hair across her face.

Without thinking, I reached up and brushed one away.

My fingers touched her cheek.

Everything stopped.

Luna did not move.

Neither did I.

The distance between us had become very small.

“This is where one of us should make a joke,” I murmured.

“Probably.”

“Do you have one?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

She looked at my mouth.

That was all it took.

I kissed her.

For one second.

Maybe two.

Then I stepped back so quickly my heel struck the stone border.

Luna stared at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Her face gave nothing away.

“I shouldn’t have—”

She caught the front of my jacket.

And kissed me back.

This kiss was not an accident.

Not polite.

Not staged.

Not for photographers.

Her fingers tightened against my chest.

My hand found her waist.

Every rule we had written suddenly seemed to belong to two different people.

When we separated, both of us were breathing too quickly.

Luna looked almost angry.

“That cannot happen again.”

“Agreed.”

Neither of us released the other.

“Absolutely not.”

“Correct.”

“This arrangement is already complicated.”

“Extremely.”

“We are not adding this.”

“No.”

Her fingers remained curled in my jacket.

I looked down.

She let go.

Then we heard applause.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Behind us.

We turned.

Derek stood twenty yards away beneath the covered walkway.

He smiled.

“Well,” he said. “That looked convincing.”

Luna’s face went cold.

“How long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough.”

My stomach dropped.

Because Derek was holding his phone.

And the camera was pointed directly at us.

<a
