You called it mercy. It was the same word Charles used thirty-seven years ago when he told me surrendering my son would protect everyone.

Sarah stopped.

Thomas closed his eyes.

She continued.

I agreed then because I was young enough to believe sacrifice and cowardice could be the same thing if the motive sounded noble. I will not repeat that mistake for Mark's child.

My throat tightened.

Samuel knew about Matthew.

More than knew.

He had understood exactly what Gregory was trying to do.

Sarah continued reading.

You told me Gregory believes the baby can be excluded because of his condition. If that is true, then Gregory has become more like Charles than either of us ever feared. A child is not a corporate defect.

I looked down.

Matthew had fallen asleep again.

My vision blurred.

No one in the Vale family had defended him to Gregory as far as I knew.

Not Mark.

Not Elvira.

Samuel had done it without ever meeting him.

Sarah's voice shook as she read.

You also told me Mark still does not know the whole truth about the trust.

She stopped again.

"What whole truth?"

Thomas moved closer.

"Keep going."

Sarah did.

Gregory did not inherit control from Charles because he was the preferred son. He received temporary voting authority because Charles believed I had left no recognized descendants. The moment my biological line became legally established, that authority was always subject to review.

David stared at Thomas.

"You knew?"

Thomas slowly shook his head.

"Not that strongly."

Sarah continued.

You knew this. I know you did, because you signed the acknowledgment Charles forced us both to sign in 1989.

Thomas looked stunned.

"There's another document."

"What acknowledgment?" I asked.

"I've never seen it."

The letter explained enough.

Elvira had signed a sworn statement recognizing Samuel as Mark's biological father.

Charles had hidden it with private trust schedules.

Gregory had spent decades acting as though the document did not exist.

"If that acknowledgment still exists," David said, "we don't need Samuel's testimony to establish Mark's biological parentage."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Correct."

"And Gregory knows it."

"Apparently."

Suddenly Samuel's disappearance looked different.

Gregory did not need to silence a witness if written proof already existed.

He needed to control the document.

"Where would it be?" Sarah asked.

Thomas looked at the old trust case.

"Charles kept original schedules in a private vault."

"Where?"

"The original Vale estate."

The place Gregory had invited us to meet.

A chill crawled up my arms.

"He wanted us there because the document is there."

Thomas considered it.

"Possibly."

David shook his head.

"Or because Gregory wants us to think it is."

Sarah read the final paragraph of Samuel's letter.

I am going somewhere Gregory cannot easily follow. If you decide to tell Mark everything, give him my number. If you decide to protect Gregory again, do not come looking for me.

No number appeared in the letter.

Perhaps Elvira already had it.

Deputy Alvarez photographed the pages.

Then she turned toward Briggs, who was waiting outside under another deputy's supervision.

"I'm going to ask him why he was collecting Samuel's property."

Thomas looked toward the window.

"Because Gregory ordered him to."

"Maybe."

Alvarez's tone reminded me of David.

"Reason isn't evidence."

We left near midnight.

The local attorney arranged rooms at a hotel under his office account.

Sarah and I shared a two-bedroom suite so Matthew would not disturb Thomas or David.

Neither of us slept much.

Around two, I found Sarah standing in the kitchenette drinking water.

"You okay?"

She gave me a tired look.

"That's becoming an impossible question."

I nodded.

She sat.

"Do you think Samuel left voluntarily?"

"I think so."

"Because of the video?"

"Because he took his guitar."

Sarah considered that.

"You don't take an instrument if you're being dragged somewhere."

"Unless someone tells you to make it look voluntary."

The possibility sat heavily between us.

My phone buzzed on the counter.

Sarah and I both froze.

Unknown number.

I opened the message.

Call your mother.

For a moment I simply stared.

Then another appeared.

Now.

I called before David could tell me not to.

My mother answered on the first ring.

"Emily?"

Her voice sounded frightened.

"Mom, are you okay?"

"Where are you?"

"Why?"

"There was a man here."

My chest tightened.

"What man?"

"He said he worked for a law firm."

Sarah was already dialing David from her phone.

"What did he want?"

"He asked whether you'd ever discussed Matthew's father with me."

I stood.

"Did you tell him anything?"

"No. I told him to leave."

"Did he?"

"Eventually."

My mother hesitated.

"Emily, he knew Matthew's full name."

Ice moved through me.

"Did he give you a card?"

"Yes."

"Read it."

I wrote the name down as she spoke.

Jonathan Kessler.

Vale Holdings outside counsel.

David arrived less than a minute later.

I showed him the name.

His expression darkened.

"That's Gregory's litigation attorney."

Sarah whispered, "They're building something."

"What?"

David looked at me.

"A case."

"Against me?"

"Possibly."

"For what?"

He did not answer immediately.

Then my phone buzzed again.

This time the message came from Mark.

Do not sign anything my father sends you. Do not agree to any evaluation of Matthew.

I called him.

Mark answered immediately.

"What evaluation?"

Silence.

"Mark."

He sounded exhausted.

"Gregory thinks he can invoke the capacity provision early."

"Matthew is three months old."

"I know."

"How?"

"He wants an independent medical assessment."

My hands began shaking.

"For what?"

"To argue Matthew will never be capable of exercising control under the trust."

Sarah closed her eyes.

I could barely speak.

"He's an infant."

"I know."

"Where are you?"

"At my father's house."

"Why?"

"Because I'm trying to stop him."

A door slammed on Mark's end.

Then I heard another voice.

Gregory.

Distant but unmistakably angry.

Mark whispered, "Emily, listen to me."

"What?"

"If anyone contacts you tomorrow claiming I authorized a medical review, I didn't."

The call cut off.

I stared at the screen.

David said, "What happened?"

Before I could answer, an email appeared.

The sender was a law firm.

The subject line contained Matthew's full legal name.

Attached was a petition.

David opened it.

His face went still.

Sarah stepped beside him.

"What is it?"

He looked at me.

"Gregory isn't asking for an evaluation anymore."

My mouth went dry.

"What is he asking for?"

David turned the screen.

"He filed for one."

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Gregory’s Petition Tried to Define My Three-Month-Old Son’s Future Before He Could Speak, and Mark Finally Chose Which Family He Would Betray

Sarah sat down on Samuel's piano bench as though her legs had stopped working. "Elvira came here?" Deputy Alvarez nodded. "According to the motel clerk, yes." Thomas looked grim rather …

[1

post-16740","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insightdrama
["GET
