We left by the rear entrance of my apartment complex after Sarah asked a neighbor to confirm whether the sedan remained outside.

It did.

During the drive I kept checking mirrors.

Every gray or black car looked suspicious.

Matthew slept through all of it.

David met us in a conference room barely large enough for five chairs and a rectangular table.

He looked enough like Sarah to make the relationship obvious: the same dark eyes, same measured way of watching before speaking.

His attention moved from Sarah to me, then to Matthew's carrier.

"Start at the beginning."

It took nearly two hours.

Sarah explained finding Mark's hidden folder.

I described the restaurant, the missing memory, the medical invoice and the genetic screening I had never knowingly authorized.

David interrupted only to ask precise questions.

Had I signed any blanket consent forms?

Could I remember anyone drawing blood?

Did Mark ever possess copies of my identification?

Had the private investigator contacted me directly?

Did I still have messages from Mark discussing the pregnancy?

With every answer, David's expression became less neutral.

Finally he removed his glasses.

"This is more serious than an affair and a paternity dispute."

Sarah nodded.

"That's what I told her."

David looked at me.

"I need to be careful because we don't have all the evidence yet. But unauthorized access to medical information, potential testing without valid consent, surveillance, and attempts to influence decisions concerning a pregnancy are separate issues. We need records, not assumptions."

"What happens now?"

"First, preserve everything. Messages, photographs, bills, the folder. Do not alter documents. Do not delete anything."

He turned to Sarah.

"How did you obtain these?"

"From a locked drawer in my husband's home office."

"Your shared residence?"

"Yes."

David made a note.

"Second, Emily, request your complete medical records from every facility you knowingly attended."

"What about the private clinic?"

"We'll contact them too."

"What if they refuse?"

"Then we determine what legal process is available."

Sarah leaned forward.

"And Mark?"

David looked at both of us.

"Do not confront him alone."

That instruction lasted less than twenty minutes.

Sarah's phone rang while David was copying documents.

Mark.

She stared at his name.

"Don't answer," I said.

The phone stopped.

Then mine began ringing.

Mark.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Sarah and I looked at each other.

"He knows," she said.

My phone stopped.

Immediately a message appeared.

Emily, call me right now.

Another followed.

Do not speak to Sarah about things you don't understand.

I showed David.

His eyes narrowed.

"Save those."

Sarah's phone buzzed again.

This time Mark sent her a message.

Where are you?

She did not answer.

Then another appeared.

You have no idea what you are doing.

David read it over her shoulder.

"He's frightened."

"Good," Sarah said.

David gave her a look.

"Frightened people with resources can behave unpredictably. His hair was disordered. His face, usually controlled almost to the point of arrogance, had lost its color.

His gaze landed on Sarah first.

Then me.

Then the blue folder.

He stopped breathing for a second.

"Sarah."

She did not move.

Mark looked at David.

"What the hell is this?"

David stood.

"My office."

"This is family business."

"Then you shouldn't have brought it into my office by barging past my receptionist."

Mark ignored him.

His eyes fixed on me.

"Emily, we need to talk privately."

"No."

My answer surprised even me.

Mark blinked.

"Please."

"No."

His gaze moved toward Matthew's carrier.

For one brief instant something appeared in his expression that I could not name.

Fear.

Pain.

Recognition.

Then it disappeared.

Sarah watched him.

"He's beautiful, Mark."

Mark closed his eyes.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Don't turn this into something it isn't."

Sarah's composure cracked.

"What is it, then?"

David stepped between them slightly.

"Everyone sits, or Mark leaves."

Mark looked ready to refuse.

Then he saw the papers laid across the table.

He sat.

Nobody offered him a drink.

For the next hour David dismantled his lies one document at a time.

He began with the investigator payments.

Mark claimed he had hired someone because he feared I might expose him publicly.

"Before or after Emily told you she was pregnant?"
