How could any clinic test me without consent?"

"That's part of what we need to establish."

"We?"

Sarah looked at me.

"If you'll let me help."

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"You shouldn't have to help me. I'm the woman who slept with your husband."

"Yes."

Her directness stopped me again.

"You hurt me, Emily. I'm not pretending otherwise."

She folded her hands on the table.

"But Mark lied to you about me, lied to me about you, hid a child, hired someone to follow the mother of that child, and may have obtained medical information without your consent. What I feel about the affair doesn't make any of that acceptable."

I stared at her.

Sarah continued.

"I can be angry with you and still know you didn't deserve this."

Something inside me loosened painfully.

For months I had assumed Sarah's hatred would be the natural punishment waiting for me if the truth emerged.

Instead the person I had feared most was the first one looking directly at what Mark had done.

"There's more," she said.

I almost told her I had reached my limit.

Then Matthew opened his eyes.

His gaze wandered toward Sarah's voice.

She smiled at him despite herself.

That tiny movement reminded me what mattered.

"Keep going."

Sarah removed several printed messages.

They were between Mark and his mother, Elvira.

I had met Elvira once without knowing who she really was.

Mark had introduced her at a restaurant as a family friend who occasionally helped with company affairs.

She had looked me over with cool politeness and asked how serious Mark and I were.

Now the memory made me nauseous.

Sarah pointed to the dates.

The messages began two days after the private screening.

Elvira: Did you confirm the pregnancy?

Mark: Yes.

Elvira: And the test?

Mark: Not good.

My eyes stopped.

Sarah waited.

I forced myself to continue.

Elvira: Then you need to handle it before people know.

Mark: I'm looking at options.

Elvira: Carla cannot be humiliated again.

I frowned.

"Who is Carla?"

Sarah's mouth tightened.

"My middle name."

She gave a humorless breath.

"His mother refuses to call me Sarah when she's angry."

The next message was worse.

Elvira: Offer the girl enough money.

Mark: She won't take it.

Elvira: Everyone has a number.

I set the pages down.

"That girl."

Sarah's face hardened.

"Yes."

"That's what I was."

"To Elvira, most people outside the family are categories, not people."

I looked at Matthew.

"And what was he?"

Sarah did not answer.

I picked up the page again.

A later message read:

Mark: If the diagnosis is confirmed, recognition changes everything.

Elvira: Then don't recognize him.

My throat closed.

"Recognition."

"Legal paternity," Sarah said.

"So this wasn't about protecting me."

"No."

"Or you."

Sarah's eyes met mine.

"No."

I finally understood something I had been too close to see.

Mark had not disappeared because he could not choose between two women.

He had disappeared because Matthew's existence threatened something.

"What changes if he acknowledges Matthew?"

Sarah sat very still.

"That is the part I haven't solved."

"Money?"

"Possibly."

"Inheritance?"

"Possibly."

"The family company?"

She hesitated.

"That is where things become complicated."

I sat again.

Sarah explained that Mark's father, Gregory Vale, had built the family business decades earlier. Mark now ran much of it, but ownership was tied to a network of trusts and succession provisions Sarah herself did not completely understand.

"There have always been rules about descendants," she said.

"What kind of rules?"

"I don't know. Mark never let me see the full documents."

"You're his wife."

"That doesn't mean his family considered me entitled to their secrets."

Bitterness edged the sentence.

She pulled out one final page.

"This was inside the folder with your photographs."

It appeared to be part of an internal legal memorandum.

Much of the language meant nothing to me.

One phrase had been highlighted.

Biological issue and succession eligibility.

My eyes moved to Matthew.

"His existence affects the company?"

"I think Mark believed it could."

"Then why not simply acknowledge him?"

Sarah gave me a long look.

"Because his family may care about more than whether Mark has a son."

My skin tightened.

"What are you saying?"

"I don't know yet."

She glanced toward Matthew.

"But when Mark learned the prenatal result, his behavior changed immediately."

The implication landed slowly.

I felt sick.

"They didn't want him because he has Down syndrome."

Sarah looked ashamed even though none of this belonged to her.

"I think Mark's family saw Matthew as a threat to whatever version of their future they had planned."

Anger replaced fear.

Not loud anger.

Something denser.

My son was three months old.

He liked warm baths, ceiling fans and the soft clicking noise I made with my tongue when he refused to settle.

He sometimes smiled in his sleep.

He hated being undressed.

He calmed when I sang badly.

And somewhere inside conference rooms and private offices, adults with money had apparently reduced him to a diagnosis and an inheritance problem before he had even taken his first breath.

"What do we do?"

Sarah reached for her phone.

"I have a cousin named David. He's an attorney."

"Does Mark know him?"

"Yes."

"Then Mark will know we're talking."

"Eventually."

I looked at the photographs again.

"Could the investigator still be watching me?"

Sarah's expression changed.

"I don't know."

That answer decided it.

I walked to the window and pulled the curtain aside only an inch.

Cars lined the street.

A delivery van idled near the corner.

A man sat inside a dark sedan across from my building, head lowered.

I could not see his face.

Maybe he was waiting for someone.

Maybe I had become paranoid.

Then he lifted a camera.

The lens pointed directly toward my apartment.

I dropped the curtain.

"Sarah."

She was already standing.

"What?"

I turned toward her, Matthew pressed against my chest.

"Someone is outside."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: We Followed the Surveillance Trail to a Lawyer’s Office, Where Mark Finally Realized His Wife and I Had Compared Every Lie

For several seconds I could hear only Matthew breathing.
