I had changed him twice, fed him, walked circles across the living room until my shoulder cramped, and spent the remaining time imagining the different ways a betrayed wife might confront the woman who had slept with her husband.

I had not slept at all.

The knock came again.

I looked through the peephole.

Sarah stood alone in the hallway wearing a charcoal coat and holding a thick blue folder against her side.

She looked nothing like the furious woman I had constructed in my head.

Her face was tired.

That frightened me more.

When I opened the door, neither of us spoke.

Sarah's eyes passed briefly over me and moved toward Matthew, who was lying awake in his bassinet behind the sofa.

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

"Is that him?" she asked.

I nodded.

She swallowed before stepping inside.

I expected accusations immediately. Instead she removed her coat carefully, folded it over the arm of a chair, and asked whether she could wash her hands before coming near the baby.

That ordinary request unsettled me.

I pointed toward the bathroom.

While water ran down the hall, I stood beside Matthew and wondered whether I had made a catastrophic mistake.

Sarah returned, stopped several feet from the bassinet, and simply looked at him.

Matthew stared back with the solemn curiosity he gave unfamiliar faces.

"He has Mark's chin," she said quietly.

The observation struck me harder than an insult would have.

"I'm sorry," I said.

She closed her eyes.

"Don't."

I waited.

When she opened them again, she pulled out a chair.

"If we start with apologies, we'll never get to the truth."

She placed the blue folder on my kitchen table.

I remained standing.

Sarah rested both hands on the cover.

"How much did Mark tell you about our marriage?"

I almost laughed, though nothing was funny.

"Which version?"

Something like recognition moved across her face.

"He told you we were separated?"

"Emotionally."

"He likes that word."

She looked toward the window.

"We never separated. We had problems. Serious ones. But he was living with me, sleeping in our room and planning a trip with me during the same months he was telling you our marriage was over."

Heat rose into my face.

I had known Mark was married.

That fact had always been the ugliest part of my own responsibility. But hearing how completely he had invented the supposed death of their marriage stripped away the final excuse I had allowed myself.

"I should have left when I found out," I said.

"Yes."

Sarah did not soften it.

Strangely, I respected her for that.

Then she added, "But you aren't why I'm here."

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed bank statements, screenshots, invoices and photographs.

The first photograph showed me leaving my obstetrician's building.

I stared at it.

The angle was distant, taken from across the street.

I wore the green coat I had bought when my regular clothes stopped fitting.

A second photograph showed me entering a pharmacy.

A third showed me carrying groceries toward my apartment.

"What is this?"

Sarah did not answer immediately.

She laid out more photographs.

Me getting into a taxi.

Me leaving work.

Me walking beside my sister.

Me outside the hospital during my pregnancy.

My skin prickled.

"Where did you get these?"

"Mark's office."

I looked up.

"He had these?"

"Hidden in a locked drawer."

I pushed the photographs away.

"Why?"

Sarah's jaw tightened.

"That's what I've spent the last week finding out."

Matthew made a small sound from his bassinet.

Both of us turned.

That was the strangest part of the morning: whatever existed between Sarah and me, our attention kept moving toward him.

She stood slowly.

"May I?"

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

Sarah lifted Matthew with a care that seemed practiced despite what Mark had once told me about their childlessness. She supported his head, drew him against her shoulder, and began rocking almost unconsciously.

Matthew settled.

For several seconds I could not speak.

Mark had described Sarah as cold.

Nothing about the woman holding my son looked cold.

"Mark said you never wanted children," I said.

Her body went rigid.

"He told you that?"

I immediately regretted repeating it.

"He said you kept postponing it. That eventually you stopped talking about having a family."

Sarah stared at Matthew.

"We tried for seven years."

I sat down.

She continued looking at the baby because perhaps looking at me would have made the words harder.

"Two miscarriages. Three failed fertility treatments. One surgery. Hundreds of injections. Years of people asking when we were going to have children as if I had misplaced them somewhere."

My stomach turned.

"He said—"

"I know what he said."

Her voice remained controlled, but I saw how tightly she held her mouth.

"Mark needed you to believe there was a reason his marriage didn't count. Making me the reason was convenient."

I covered my face briefly with both hands.

There are discoveries that hurt because they reveal another person's character.

Others hurt because they reveal your own willingness to believe.

This one did both.

Sarah returned Matthew to the bassinet and sat across from me.

"Emily, I didn't come here to punish you for sleeping with my husband."

The bluntness of the sentence made me flinch.

"I came because Mark has been lying to both of us about something larger."

She pushed a bank statement across the table.

Several transactions had been highlighted.

They were small enough not to look remarkable at first.

Each payment went to the same private consulting firm.

"What is Northfield Investigations?"

"A private investigator."

My stomach tightened again.

"I called the number."

She tapped the paper.

"They wouldn't tell me what Mark hired them for, obviously. But one of these payments begins the same week you told him you were pregnant."

I looked at the photographs.

"No."

Sarah watched me carefully.

"He had you followed."

"Why?"

"I don't know yet."

"That doesn't make sense."

"I agree."

"He knew where I lived. He knew my appointments. He could have asked me anything."

"Maybe information wasn't the only purpose."

That sentence remained suspended between us.

I pushed back from the table and walked toward the kitchen counter because suddenly sitting felt impossible.

"Did he think I was seeing someone else? That the baby wasn't his?"

"I considered that."

Sarah opened another section of the folder.

"But then I found these."

She handed me handwritten notes.

Dates.

Locations.

Appointment times.

My doctor's name.

My workplace.

One notation beside an ultrasound date read: Confirmed alone.

Another said: Sister present afterward.

I felt watched retroactively, as though every private moment of pregnancy had been contaminated by eyes I had never seen.

"Why would he care whether I was alone?"

Sarah's voice lowered.

"That's the question that kept me awake."

Matthew began fussing.

I lifted him, grateful for something physical to do.

His small hand caught my shirt near the collar.

"I thought Mark disappeared because he was ashamed," I said.

Sarah shook her head.

"He was afraid."

"Of you finding out?"

"No."

She looked at the papers.

"Of something else."

I stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because I confronted him about the investigator."

My breath caught.

"When?"

"Four nights ago."

"What did he say?"

"First he denied it. Then I showed him the payments."

Sarah's gaze hardened.

"He asked whether I had contacted you."

A chill moved across my shoulders.

"What did you tell him?"

"That I hadn't."

"And?"

"He told me to stay away from you."

Matthew's fingers tightened in my shirt.

Sarah leaned forward.

"Not angrily, Emily. He was terrified."

I remembered the message she had sent the night before.

Do not tell Mark you contacted me.

"Why?"

"I asked him."

She opened the folder again.

"He said you were unstable."

I laughed once, sharply.

"Of course."

"He claimed you'd been threatening him, that you wanted money, that you might harm yourself or the baby to force him to leave me."

My anger arrived so cleanly that it steadied me.

"I never threatened him."

"I know."

"How?"

"Because I found copies of your messages."

I stared at her.

She pulled several printed screenshots from the folder.

My messages to Mark.

Please call me.

Matthew's cardiology appointment is Thursday.

I am not asking you to leave anyone tonight. I am asking you to acknowledge your son.

You cannot keep disappearing.

Nothing threatening.

Nothing unstable.

Just increasingly desperate attempts to make him behave like a father.

"He saved all of these," Sarah said. "But there were other documents mixed in with them."

She hesitated.

For the first time since arriving, she looked uncertain about continuing.

"What documents?"

Sarah opened a transparent sleeve.

Inside was a draft agreement from a law office.

I recognized my own full name near the top.

"What is that?"

"A confidentiality agreement."

I shifted Matthew to my other arm.

"I've never seen it."

"I know."

She slid it toward me.

The legal language was dense, but certain phrases jumped out: financial settlement, waiver of future claims, nondisclosure, non-disparagement, paternal identity.

I read the final number twice.

It was more money than I earned in three years.

My throat tightened.

"He was going to pay me?"

Sarah looked at me steadily.

"To disappear."

The room seemed to shrink.

"Disappear how?"

"Take the money. Agree never to identify him publicly as Matthew's father. Limit legal claims. No contact with his family."

"Why didn't he offer it?"

"I don't know."

I looked at my sleeping son.

"He watched me for months while preparing a contract to erase us."

Sarah did not correct me.

Another paper remained beneath the agreement.

She placed her hand over it before I could reach.

"This is why I needed to see you in person."

"What is it?"

"I need you to answer something first."

Her face had become pale.

"During your pregnancy, did Mark ever take you somewhere when you were ill or unconscious?"

My skin went cold.

I thought of the restaurant.

The orange juice.

The dizziness.

The missing hour.

"I don't know."

Sarah did not move.

I whispered, "Why are you asking me that?"

She lifted her hand from the paper.

It was a medical invoice from a private clinic.

My name appeared beneath Mark's billing information.

The date was unmistakable.

The night of the restaurant.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: A Medical Invoice From the Night I Lost an Hour Forced Me to Question What Mark Had Done While I Could Not Remember

At ten minutes past nine the next morning, someone knocked three times on my apartment door.
