Family holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met Camille and I felt\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung?\u201d Valerie asked.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word entered the room softly.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie considered it.<\/p>\n<p>Then she nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander seemed surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first honest sentence you\u2019ve said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked wounded.<\/p>\n<p>She did not rescue him from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you love her?\u201d Valerie asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Painful.<\/p>\n<p>Honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you love me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation answered more than either possible word.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie nodded again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cValerie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had nine months to have private conversations with yourself. I\u2019ve had three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked up her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not making your next decision for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means you wanted a new life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked around the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalk away like twenty-seven years mean nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Valerie\u2019s composure cracked.<\/p>\n<p>Not into tears.<\/p>\n<p>Into anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not accuse me of disrespecting twenty-seven years while standing in the house you secretly bought for the woman you planned to marry after me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie breathed once.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>When she spoke, her voice had steadied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to betray the history and then use the history to stop me from responding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Theresa rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander looked at his mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ernest walked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>At the threshold, he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Without turning around, he said, \u201cSunday dinner is canceled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he left.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa followed.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie was last.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander called her name.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped with one hand on the door.<\/p>\n<p>Behind her stood the husband she had loved for nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead waited a driveway, his parents, lawyers, financial consequences, and a life she had not chosen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming home?\u201d Alexander asked.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thought of Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>The bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Camille\u2019s abandoned ring.<\/p>\n<p>And one fact that Alexander still did not know.<\/p>\n<p>The Greenwich house was not the only asset his secret company had touched.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had discovered another transfer that morning.<\/p>\n<p>A much larger one.<\/p>\n<p>One Valerie had not yet mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find out what else you\u2019ve been hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=16667\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Second Transfer Led Valerie to a Company Alexander Never Mentioned, and Its Records Suggested His Betrayal Reached Far Beyond Camille<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alexander removed his hand from Camille\u2019s waist as though the touch had burned him. \u201cValerie.\u201d He said her name again.
