Upper East Side apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest climbed into the car first.<\/p>\n<p>He was seventy-five, broad-shouldered despite his age, with silver hair and the deliberate movements of a man who had undergone two knee surgeries but refused to admit either had slowed him.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa followed.<\/p>\n<p>Neither spoke until the car joined traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Ernest looked at Valerie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnecticut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll understand when we arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood the house.<\/p>\n<p>It was even larger than the photographs suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Cream limestone.<\/p>\n<p>Black-framed windows.<\/p>\n<p>A circular drive.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh flower arrangements near the steps.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour son bought it Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie turned toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re about to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The driver stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie stepped out first.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa followed.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest remained seated for two seconds longer before climbing from the car.<\/p>\n<p>Music floated faintly through open French doors.<\/p>\n<p>Someone laughed inside.<\/p>\n<p>A woman\u2019s laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie walked toward the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>No one stopped them.<\/p>\n<p>At the top step, she heard Alexander\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Warm.<\/p>\n<p>Relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>Happy.<\/p>\n<p>The voice of a man celebrating.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>Her face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie pushed open the door.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, sunlight spilled across marble floors.<\/p>\n<p>Champagne stood in silver buckets.<\/p>\n<p>A long dining table had been set for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>And beside the fireplace, wearing a pale dress and a six-carat diamond ring, stood Camille Laurent.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander was next to her.<\/p>\n<p>His hand rested at her waist.<\/p>\n<p>He saw Valerie first.<\/p>\n<p>His face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>Camille followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>Then she saw Ernest and Theresa behind her.<\/p>\n<p>The champagne glass in her hand stopped halfway to her lips.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie stepped farther into the room.<\/p>\n<p>She looked around slowly, as though inspecting a property she had been invited to purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned to Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>His mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cValerie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She raised one finger.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Camille.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze moved deliberately from the diamond ring to the hand around her husband\u2019s waist.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Valerie turned toward Theresa and Ernest.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was calm enough to carry through the entire
