Around her, lawyers shuffled marked-up contracts. A junior analyst was whispering to someone near the windows. The smell of burnt espresso drifted in from the corridor.

Valerie glanced at her phone because she expected a message from her son’s school.

Instead, she saw the name of her private bank.

A real-estate transaction had been completed from an account jointly held by Valerie and her husband, Alexander.

The amount beneath it made her read the line twice.

$10,000,000.

For several seconds, nothing in the room seemed to move except the second hand on the wall clock.

“Valerie?”

Her attorney, Daniel Cho, had one finger resting on the signature page.

She locked the phone and placed it facedown beside her fountain pen.

“Give me five minutes.”

Daniel studied her expression. Most of the money in it had come from Valerie’s family holdings and profits from Bennett Development, the real-estate firm she had rebuilt after her father’s death. Alexander knew that.
