She had stopped crying, but she kept one hand around my wrist as though letting go might make me disappear again.

Matthew rode in another vehicle under police supervision.

I couldn't stop thinking about what he had said.

The original ledger was beneath Willow Creek.

Not in the barn.

Not inside Anthony's hidden compartment.

Beneath the house.

The words kept circling through my mind.

My husband had hidden the evidence in pieces.

A key.

A box.

Letters.

A copy of the ledger.

But he had never shown me the original.

Perhaps he had never been able to.

As dawn began to lighten the sky, Sarah received a call from one of the officers.

“Cole is gone.”

I turned.

“What?”

“They checked the surrounding roads. His car was abandoned.”

“Where?”

“Near the old service road behind Willow Creek.”

My stomach tightened.

“He went there already.”

“That is what we're assuming.”

Sarah looked at me.

“We need to move.”

The convoy changed direction.

I stared through the window as the city slowly disappeared behind us.

Lily was quiet.

Then she whispered, “Grandma?”

“Yes?”

“Is Dad coming with us?”

I didn't know how to answer.

“He's with the police.”

“Are they going to put him in jail?”

“I don't know.”

She looked down.

“I don't want him hurt.”

Neither did I.

That was the terrible part.

Whatever Matthew had done, whatever he had lied about, he was still my son.

I could hate what he had done without wanting him destroyed.

But I couldn't protect him from consequences.

Not anymore.

Willow Creek appeared just after sunrise.

The house looked almost peaceful.

Mist hung over the grass.

The barn stood at the edge of the property.

The old trees beside the creek were motionless.

Nothing about the place suggested that beneath its floors might be evidence capable of unraveling decades of lies.

An officer approached.

“Stay behind us.”

I nodded.

We entered through the kitchen.

The house smelled of dust and old wood.

I stopped beside the table.

The sugar jar was still there.

The same place where I had found Anthony's first letter.

I touched the glass.

Everything had begun there.

Sarah looked at me.

“Where do we start?”

I thought about Anthony's words.

The house is a witness.

I walked toward the study.

His desk remained against the wall.

The drawers had been emptied.

The shelves had been disturbed.

Someone had searched this room after we left.

“They were looking for something.”

Sarah nodded.

“The original ledger.”

I opened the bottom drawer.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the key.

17.

I took it from my pocket.

Sarah watched.

“Where did that come from?”

“Anthony's study.”

I held it up.

“The same number was on the ledger.”

We searched the study again.

Behind the bookcase, I found a narrow metal plate.

It wasn't black.

It was almost brown with age.

The key didn't fit.

“Try the cellar,” Paul said.

We went downstairs.

The cellar was colder than the rest of the house.

A single bulb hung from the ceiling.

Three hospital bracelets had been found there before.

MARA ELLIS.

ELLA ELLIS.

JONAH ELLIS.

I looked at the place where we had discovered them.

Nothing remained.

Except a scratch on the floor.

A square.

I crouched.

The black symbol.

The same shape Lily had drawn.

I ran my finger across it.

“This isn't a marker.”

Sarah knelt beside me.

“What is it?”

“A cover.”

We cleared the dust.

A rectangular outline appeared.

Paul found a screwdriver.

The panel lifted.

Underneath was a shallow cavity.

Empty.

I felt my heart sink.

“He already found it.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Maybe not.”

She pointed toward the wall.

A narrow passage continued beneath the foundation.

The opening was barely wide enough for one person.

An officer examined it.

“Old service tunnel.”

I stared.

“Where does it go?”

“Possibly nowhere.”

“Find out.”

Two officers went first.

We followed.

The passage smelled of damp earth.

The ceiling was low.

Lily stayed above with another officer.

I didn't want her anywhere near the tunnel.

We reached a brick wall.

At its center was a metal door.

There was no handle.

Only a small black square.

Sarah looked at me.

“The symbol.”

I nodded.

I pressed my palm against it.

Nothing happened.

Then I remembered the red scarf.

Evelyn's scarf.

I had seen a photograph of her wearing it.

I pulled the copy of the ledger from my bag.

There was a notation in the margin.

R.S.

Red square.

I looked at the door.

“It's not black.”

Sarah frowned.

“What?”

“The square.”

I touched it.

“It was painted black.”

I scraped the edge with my fingernail.

Underneath was red.

I pressed.

The door clicked.

We all stepped back.

It opened inward.

Inside was a small room.

A metal cabinet stood against the wall.

On top was an old tape recorder.

Beside it was a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Helena.

I knew the handwriting.

Anthony.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

If you have found this, then Matthew failed to keep you away.

I closed my eyes.

The letter continued.

I am sorry.

I had believed I could protect you by controlling what you knew.

I was wrong.

I read on.

The original ledger is here.

It proves what your grandfather did, what Evelyn discovered, and why three children were separated.

But it also proves something about me.

I stopped.

Sarah said nothing.

I forced myself to continue.

I made a promise to Evelyn.

Then I broke it.

I looked at Sarah.

“What promise?”

I read the next line.

I promised to reunite the children.

I did not.

The words blurred.

Anthony had known.

He had intended to fix everything.

And failed.

The tape recorder clicked.

A voice came through.

Anthony.

“If Helena is hearing this, I am probably dead.”

His voice sounded tired.

“I need you to understand something. Matthew is not the beginning of this.”

I held my breath.

“He is the consequence.”

The recording continued.

“Your father-in-law built a system around property, money, and bloodlines. He believed that if he controlled the records, he controlled the people connected to them.”

I looked at the ledger.

“Evelyn discovered the system.”

Anthony continued.

“She tried to expose it. She disappeared.”

I closed my eyes.

“She left three children behind.”

A pause.

“One was Mara.”

My chest tightened.

“One was Ella.”

Another pause.

“And one was Jonah.”

The tape clicked.

“I spent years trying to find them.”

I whispered, “Why didn't you tell me?”

The recording answered as though Anthony had heard me.

“Because I was afraid.”

The next words broke me.

“Not of losing the house. Of losing you.”

The recording continued.

“I believed the people behind this would hurt you if they knew you understood your own history.”

I sat on the floor.

Sarah crouched beside me.

Anthony's voice grew quieter.

“Then Matthew became involved.”

A long pause.

“He thought he could use the system to protect us.”

I wiped my eyes.

“He was wrong.”

The tape ended.

The room was silent.

Then we heard movement above us.

A door slammed.

Paul shouted.

“Someone's inside!”

I stood.

We ran back through the tunnel.

When we reached the cellar, an officer was struggling with a man near the stairs.

Daniel Cole.

He broke free.

He ran toward the kitchen.

I followed without thinking.

“Stop!”

He turned.

For one second, our eyes met.

Then he smiled.

Not kindly.

Not angrily.

Almost sadly.

“You don't know what you've opened.”

He disappeared through the back door.

Officers chased him.

I stood in the kitchen, breathing hard.

Sarah came beside me.

“Are you okay?”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something on the floor.

A small black square.

A piece of paper.

Cole had dropped it.

I picked it up.

On the back was a handwritten address.

Not Willow Creek.

Not the airport.

Not the abandoned property.

A hospital.

And beneath the address were two names.

Ella Ellis.

Jonah Ellis.

I stared at them.

They weren't just names from the past.

They were alive.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Names From the Ledger Led Us to Two People Who Had Spent Their Lives Believing They Were Strangers to Me

We left the abandoned property before sunrise.
