More importantly, I don&#39;t trust the people around me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony had never told me that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI discovered financial records involving properties connected to my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used several companies to move money and land. I believed the records were old and irrelevant. I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony looked down at a folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone has been continuing the same system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current person handling the transfers is not acting alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video ended.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah opened the next file.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony appeared again.<\/p>\n<p>This time he was visibly frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something happens to me, do not let Matthew convince Helena that she is incapable of making decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knew someone might try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatthew believes he can control the situation. I don&#39;t think he understands how deep it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Anthony said something that stopped me cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Cole is involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah paused the video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s the same name Lily gave us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>My husband&#39;s warning had survived.<\/p>\n<p>Lily had unknowingly repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>The pieces were beginning to align.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah resumed the video.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony said, \u201cCole has access to property records and financial transfers. I believe he is using Matthew because Matthew has access to Helena&#39;s signature and accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony knew.<\/p>\n<p>He had known before I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may tell Matthew that the house must be sold quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cHe told me exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah opened another.<\/p>\n<p>This one was audio.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony&#39;s voice was weaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know how much time I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should stop asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anthony said, \u201cWho sent you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then the man replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at the timestamp.<\/p>\n<p>Two days before Anthony entered the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you find the original hospital records?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Paul opened the property folder.<\/p>\n<p>There were copies of deeds.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>The documents showed that several properties had been moved between companies before being sold again.<\/p>\n<p>My house appeared in one document as a pending transfer.<\/p>\n<p>The buyer was a company I had never heard of.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman Residential Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>The same name Paul had mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement had been prepared six months before I signed the power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went numb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey planned this before I signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo France wasn&#39;t the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the final step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah didn&#39;t correct me.<\/p>\n<p>Lily came over quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I tell you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said the house belonged to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah picked up another document.<\/p>\n<p>The property records contained three names.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Ella Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began trembling.<\/p>\n<p>Those names sounded familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I remembered them.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had seen them somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The bracelets.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the hospital bracelets from Anthony&#39;s old storage box.<\/p>\n<p>Three names.<\/p>\n<p>Mara Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Ella Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>I had dismissed them because they meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>Now they meant everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would my name be there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what we need to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma, don&#39;t be angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said you weren&#39;t supposed to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the babies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word hit me like a physical blow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat babies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah crouched beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily, where did you hear that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was talking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad and Mr. Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said three children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Three children.<\/p>\n<p>Mara.<\/p>\n<p>Ella.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to find out what happened at that hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A noise came from outside.<\/p>\n<p>The office door handle moved.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>Someone tried the lock.<\/p>\n<p>Paul stepped toward the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah motioned for him to stop.<\/p>\n<p>The handle moved again.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man&#39;s voice came through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Barbosa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew the voice.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Cole.<\/p>\n<p>I had never met him.<\/p>\n<p>Yet I recognized him from the recording.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke calmly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have something that belongs to my client.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah whispered, \u201cDon&#39;t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour granddaughter is not the only person who can be hurt by what you&#39;ve found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily gripped my hand.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the locked door.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Anthony&#39;s files.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the names.<\/p>\n<p>Mara.<\/p>\n<p>Ella.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood that the truth wasn&#39;t simply about a house.<\/p>\n<p>It was about why those names
