I could hear footsteps behind us, steady and unhurried, as though whoever followed knew exactly where we were going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t look back,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Paul was behind us, keeping pace with Sarah. Every few seconds he glanced over his shoulder, then urged us forward with a small movement of his hand. The fluorescent lights above us flickered as we passed beneath them, making the corridor seem longer than it was.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stumbled once.<\/p>\n<p>I caught her before she fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m okay,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she wasn&#39;t okay.<\/p>\n<p>Neither was I.<\/p>\n<p>We reached a gray emergency door marked EXIT B17. Paul pushed the bar.<\/p>\n<p>It opened.<\/p>\n<p>Cold evening air rushed inside.<\/p>\n<p>We stepped into a fenced service area behind the terminal, where delivery trucks and maintenance vehicles moved between concrete barriers. The airport noise was distant here, reduced to a low mechanical roar.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah pointed toward a waiting vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t a taxi.<\/p>\n<p>It was an ordinary dark sedan with no markings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho does it belong to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose friend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The driver unlocked the doors.<\/p>\n<p>We got inside.<\/p>\n<p>Lily sat beside me in the back, still clutching her notebook. Paul took the front passenger seat, and Sarah drove.<\/p>\n<p>The moment the doors closed, Lily began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>There were no dramatic sobs.<\/p>\n<p>Just tears sliding down her cheeks while she stared at her hands.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled her against me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to be brave now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She leaned against my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily whispered, \u201cDad said you wouldn&#39;t believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart hurt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said old people get confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if you got upset, they would put you somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me through the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said there was a place where you could stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word seemed to drain the warmth from the car.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah tightened her grip on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you hear him say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men with the black symbols?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came to our house before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy house with Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot mine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came when Mom wasn&#39;t home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exchanged a glance with Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey talked about papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma&#39;s papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything you remember helps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne man said the old lady had already signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said everything was ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asked gently, \u201cDid they mention the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat it would be empty soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words settled heavily inside the car.<\/p>\n<p>I looked out the window.<\/p>\n<p>Buildings slid past us in the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>My home.<\/p>\n<p>My husband.<\/p>\n<p>My son.<\/p>\n<p>Everything I thought I understood had become a collection of locked doors.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily touched my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn&#39;t always the boss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah glanced at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe listened to the men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he seem afraid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne man told him what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed something.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, I had believed Matthew was the center of everything.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had been caught inside something larger.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps Lily had simply misunderstood what she saw.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t know.<\/p>\n<p>And I refused to invent answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you hear a name?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n<p>Lily thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what Dad called him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Cole?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Paul reached into his coat and took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Cole handled several property transfers for a development company two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul showed her the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColeman Residential Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat company bought three properties in your neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a strange pressure in my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas mine one of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot officially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnofficially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour house may have been the fourth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The car became silent again.<\/p>\n<p>Lily suddenly spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said the fourth one was the important one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fourth what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asked, \u201cDid he say anything about a number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same number appeared in several places.<\/p>\n<p>Four properties.<\/p>\n<p>Four black symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Four people involved?<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Anthony&#39;s hidden documents.<\/p>\n<p>There had been four folders.<\/p>\n<p>PROPERTY.<\/p>\n<p>BANK.<\/p>\n<p>MATTHEW.<\/p>\n<p>And one folder I hadn&#39;t opened.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me through the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it called?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried to remember.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think it had a name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHidden folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah made a quick decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need somewhere secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;ll use the courthouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Matthew can control a lot of things. He can&#39;t control the fact that a judge will eventually see what we&#39;ve found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The car turned downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Lily had stopped crying.<\/p>\n<p>She was staring through the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we going back to the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dad said something was underneath it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart skipped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderneath what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if you found what Grandpa left, you&#39;d find out where the money went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah immediately slowed the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said Grandpa took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Grandpa was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how could he have taken anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily whispered something that made all of us fall silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said Grandpa didn&#39;t die because he was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the world tilt.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony had died after a long illness.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that was what the doctors had told me.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that was what Matthew had told me.<\/p>\n<p>I had never questioned it.<\/p>\n<p>Not seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Why would I?<\/p>\n<p>I had watched my husband lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>I had watched him struggle to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>I had held his hand in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>I had believed his death was tragic but natural.<\/p>\n<p>Now an eight-year-old girl was telling me my son had said otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The car continued through the city.<\/p>\n<p>I held Lily tighter.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the airport, I allowed myself to believe something simple.<\/p>\n<p>We were together.<\/p>\n<p>We were alive.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever Matthew had planned, he no longer had complete control.<\/p>\n<p>But when we reached Sarah&#39;s office, a man was waiting across the street.<\/p>\n<p>He stood beneath a streetlamp.<\/p>\n<p>Gray jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Hands in pockets.<\/p>\n<p>Watching the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Lily saw him too.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSquare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the man&#39;s coat.<\/p>\n<p>Near his left shoulder was a small black patch.<\/p>\n<p>I knew then that escaping the airport had not ended anything.<\/p>\n<p>It had only moved the danger closer.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=16173\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Hidden Folder Contained a Recording From My Husband That Forced Me to Question the Story I Had Believed About His Final Days<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The corridor narrowed ahead of us, and Lily&#39;s hand felt impossibly small inside mine.
