He may tell you France is safer. He may tell you I wanted you to leave.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>The house is yours. The account in your name is yours. I placed the documents here because I knew one day someone might try to make you believe you were incapable of protecting yourself.<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Paul quietly stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah waited.<\/p>\n<p>I read the next line.<\/p>\n<p>If Matthew ever asks you to sign anything without giving you time to read it, stop.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony had known.<\/p>\n<p>Not everything.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>There is proof on the drive.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t finish.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah took the thumb drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old desktop in the study still worked.<\/p>\n<p>We carried everything there.<\/p>\n<p>I sat in Anthony&#39;s chair.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah connected the drive.<\/p>\n<p>Several folders appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The first was labeled PROPERTY.<\/p>\n<p>The second BANK.<\/p>\n<p>The third was simply MATTHEW.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah opened it.<\/p>\n<p>There were audio files.<\/p>\n<p>Documents.<\/p>\n<p>Emails.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>We clicked the first recording.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew&#39;s voice filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mom signs everything, she can be moved to Lyon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if she refuses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she&#39;ll believe I&#39;m protecting her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the arms of the chair.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce she&#39;s there, the house sale is straightforward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the granddaughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe stays with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah paused the recording.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cPlay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew&#39;s voice returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaula is the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other man asked, \u201cWhat are you doing about her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaula isn&#39;t in France because she wants to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Another file was opened.<\/p>\n<p>This one contained a conversation between Matthew and a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Paula.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatthew, you cannot keep Lily from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou threatened me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making this harder than it needs to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ll see her when you stop interfering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Paula cried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you&#39;re doing to your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew replied quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen keep your mouth shut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>I stood up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe separated Lily from her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he was planning to separate you from everyone too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the documents.<\/p>\n<p>There was a draft sale agreement for my house.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>The amount listed made my stomach turn.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew had already negotiated a sale.<\/p>\n<p>My signature had been placed on preliminary documents.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan he sell it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot if we move quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah picked up her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to preserve every file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul began photographing the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy stood in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>She had been crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy had once said Matthew was becoming controlling.<\/p>\n<p>I had defended him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s just worried about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nancy looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I had pushed harder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn&#39;t your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not. But I should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>A message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>I know you&#39;re at the house.<\/p>\n<p>A second message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Give Sarah the box.<\/p>\n<p>A third.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#39;t understand what you&#39;re doing.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t make me come there.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah read the messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The son I had raised was threatening me through a phone while his belongings were still scattered across my house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall them,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah did.<\/p>\n<p>While we waited, I returned to the black square.<\/p>\n<p>Something about it bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>Why had Anthony hidden everything there?<\/p>\n<p>Why had Lily drawn the same symbol?<\/p>\n<p>I opened the metal compartment again.<\/p>\n<p>There was a smaller envelope underneath the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony stood beside the house.<\/p>\n<p>He was younger.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him was Matthew, perhaps twenty-five.<\/p>\n<p>On the back Anthony had written:<\/p>\n<p>He thinks this house is an asset.<\/p>\n<p>He doesn&#39;t understand that it is a witness.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>The house had been holding secrets for years.<\/p>\n<p>Not ghosts.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Memories.<\/p>\n<p>Things people thought were forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>The police arrived twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>They took statements.<\/p>\n<p>They photographed the documents.<\/p>\n<p>The moving men were questioned.<\/p>\n<p>They claimed they had been hired by Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah showed them the sale documents.<\/p>\n<p>One officer looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you authorize the removal of your property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you authorize your son to act for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you understand what you signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll document that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I expected Matthew to arrive immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Barbosa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should leave the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone who doesn&#39;t want you to make this worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hung up.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated again.<\/p>\n<p>This time, the message contained a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed the airport.<\/p>\n<p>My gate.<\/p>\n<p>The exact place where I had been sitting.<\/p>\n<p>Then another photograph appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Lily.<\/p>\n<p>She was standing beside Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was turned away from the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath was one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>You should have listened the first time.<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have Lily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah immediately called the police.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something in the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A black square sticker on a wall behind Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>The same shape.<\/p>\n<p>The same color.<\/p>\n<p>The same symbol Lily had drawn.<\/p>\n<p>I zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t decoration.<\/p>\n<p>It was a marker.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what she was trying to show me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe square.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t speak for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cMom, come back to the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Lily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making this worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is my granddaughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith people who can handle the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>She was listening.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t supposed to get confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word.<\/p>\n<p>Confused.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t concern.<\/p>\n<p>It was a diagnosis he had prepared for me.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome back, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said the words that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>My son had just admitted that he was using Lily against me.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cYou&#39;re not taking her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah was already moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack to the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed Lily&#39;s drawing from the table.<\/p>\n<p>The crossed-out window.<\/p>\n<p>The black square.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I understood something.<\/p>\n<p>The symbol wasn&#39;t just connected to the house.<\/p>\n<p>It was connected to the people Matthew was working with.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow, Lily knew enough to warn me before I ever saw the
