He had said a sale was being arranged, that the paperwork was complicated, and that my temporary move to France would make everything easier.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily&#39;s message returned to me.<\/p>\n<p>RUN.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath it, in my memory, her drawing.<\/p>\n<p>A crossed-out window.<\/p>\n<p>A black square.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooklyn,\u201d I said. \u201cPark Slope. Don&#39;t go home yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are already removing things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah inhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Matthew ever ask you to sign a power of attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow broad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign anything concerning the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he explain them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said they were for the bank and taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cHelena, I want you to listen carefully. Do not sign anything else. Do not give Matthew your passport. Do not return to the house alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy passport is with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that is the first thing we get back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, Sarah entered the diner.<\/p>\n<p>She looked exactly as I remembered: dark glasses, gray suit, leather briefcase, and the expression of a woman who had already decided that arguing would be a waste of time.<\/p>\n<p>She sat opposite me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me the note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I handed it over.<\/p>\n<p>She studied the handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s Lily&#39;s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMessages from Matthew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed her everything.<\/p>\n<p>She read them silently.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know where you are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>A new message.<\/p>\n<p>I know you&#39;re not sick.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocation sharing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Within minutes, she found an application I didn&#39;t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Family Care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t install that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatthew did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She disabled location sharing and several permissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom now on, don&#39;t answer calls unless you have to.
