I just didn’t know whether the feeling belonged to the airport, the journey, or the son walking beside me with his hand pressed firmly against the small of my back. Matthew kept telling me to hurry. I kept pretending I couldn’t hear him over the rolling suitcases, the boarding announcements, and the constant hum of travelers moving beneath the enormous departure screens.

It was supposed to be a celebration. My retirement. My sixty-fifth birthday was only weeks away, and Matthew had told everyone that France would be the beginning of my new life. He had arranged the flights, packed most of my luggage, booked what he called a beautiful apartment outside Paris, and insisted that I deserved to stop worrying about the house in Brooklyn. “You’ve spent your whole life taking care of everybody else,” he had told me. “Now let me take care of you.”

I had believed him.

Or perhaps I had wanted to.

After Anthony died, Matthew became the person who handled things I was too tired to handle myself. He spoke with the bank. He helped with insurance forms. He arranged repairs around the house. When I forgot a password or misplaced a document, he was always there. Sometimes his help felt a little too efficient, but I told myself that was simply what adulthood looked like when a child became responsible for his aging parent.

That morning, however, he seemed different.

He had chosen my clothes for the flight, reminding me that the weather in France could be cool at night. He had taken my passport from my purse the night before and placed it in a leather travel folder. When I asked to see it, he smiled and said, “Mom, everything is together. You don’t need to keep checking.”

I laughed then.

Now, inside the airport, I wished I hadn’t.

Lily walked a few steps behind us, dragging her little purple backpack across the polished floor. She was eight, thin as a reed, with two uneven braids that Paula usually made perfectly. Paula, her mother, had not come to the airport. Matthew said she was working in France and would meet us later. I had asked why Lily was traveling with us instead of staying with her mother, and Matthew had answered so casually that I accepted it.

“She’ll be happier with us for the first few days.”

Us.

He always said that lately.

As though my life had quietly become a family project I had not been invited to discuss.

At the security checkpoint, Lily caught up with me. Her face looked unusually serious.

“Grandma,” she whispered.

I bent toward her.

“What is it?”

She glanced at Matthew.

He was standing several feet away, checking his phone.

Lily reached into her backpack and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

She pushed it into my palm so quickly that I almost dropped it.

“Don’t open it here,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Her eyes moved toward her father again.

Then she shook her head.

“Just promise.”

There was something in her expression that made my stomach tighten.

“I promise.”

She stepped away before I could ask anything else.

I slipped the paper into the pocket of my cardigan.

For the next several minutes, I said nothing.

Matthew was smiling again.

He pointed toward the departure board and told me our gate had changed. Then he took my suitcase handle from me, even though I had been pulling it without trouble.

“Let me.”

“I can manage.”

“I know you can.”

The answer sounded affectionate.

The grip on the suitcase sounded like an order.

We walked toward the new gate.

Every few steps, I touched the pocket containing Lily’s paper.

I wanted to read it.

I was afraid to.

Finally, while Matthew was speaking to an airline employee, I slipped behind a large advertising column and unfolded the paper.

There was only one word.

RUN.

The letters were written in purple crayon.

I read it again.

RUN.

My first thought was that Lily was playing some strange game.

My second was that she had heard an adult argument and misunderstood it.

My third thought frightened me because it arrived without explanation.

She was trying to save me from something.

I folded the paper again.

My hands had begun to tremble.

Matthew came around the column.

“There you are.”

I smiled immediately.

“I was looking for the restroom.”

“You should have told me.”

“I didn’t think it would take long.”

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then his expression softened.

“Mom, you’re exhausted. This trip is going to be good for you.”

I nodded.

“Of course.”

He touched my shoulder.

“You trust me, right?”

The question was so direct that I felt something inside me pull tight.

“Of course I trust you.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

Then he walked ahead.

I watched him.

For the first time in years, I noticed how carefully he moved through a crowded place. He never seemed lost. He always knew which corridor to take, which door to use, where the elevators were. He checked his phone repeatedly, but not like a traveler checking a boarding pass.

More like someone waiting for instructions.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

I gave her the smallest nod.

She lowered her eyes.

At Gate 42, Matthew bought coffee for himself and tea for me. He handed me the cup without asking whether I wanted it.

“Drink this. You barely had breakfast.”

I took it.

The tea smelled like cinnamon.

I couldn't swallow.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Matthew.

Mom, please don't wander off.

I looked up.

He was sitting directly across from me.

I slowly raised my eyes.

“Why did you text me?”

He shrugged.

“Just making sure you saw it.”

“You're sitting right there.”

“I know.”

He smiled.

The smile didn't reach his eyes.

I looked toward Lily.

She was drawing in a small notebook.

A window.

Then she crossed it out.

Beside the window she drew a black square.

I stared at the page.

She quickly covered it with her arm.

Something cold traveled down my spine.

“Lily?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Matthew looked over.

“What are you drawing?”

“Nothing.”

He stood.

“Let me see.”

Lily closed the notebook.

“No.”

His face hardened for a fraction of a second.

Then he laughed.

“Okay.
