No emergency.<\/p>\n
Just work.<\/p>\n
I put on my jacket.<\/p>\n
At the door, Matthew called after me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou forgot this.\u201d<\/p>\n
He tossed me the van key.<\/p>\n
I caught it.<\/p>\n
A year earlier, I had walked toward a stranger\u2019s house carrying food and wondering how I would buy medicine.<\/p>\n
That night, somebody had expected desperation to make my choice for me.<\/p>\n
They were almost right about the desperation.<\/p>\n
They were wrong about the choice.<\/p>\n
But the lesson I carried afterward was not that good people never bend.<\/p>\n
We do.<\/p>\n
We hesitate.<\/p>\n
We get frightened.<\/p>\n
We compromise.<\/p>\n
We fail one another.<\/p>\n
Sometimes we accept money we wish we had refused.<\/p>\n
Sometimes we stay silent too long.<\/p>\n
Sometimes we sit on a curb with something valuable in our hand and seriously consider becoming the person somebody already expects us to be.<\/p>\n
Character was not the absence of that moment.<\/p>\n
It was what happened next.<\/p>\n
I slipped the key into my pocket.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Matthew returned to breakfast.<\/p>\n
I opened the door.<\/p>\n
Outside, morning traffic had already begun.<\/p>\n
Drivers were loading vans.<\/p>\n
Restaurants were receiving produce.<\/p>\n
Parents were walking children to school.<\/p>\n
Somewhere, somebody was probably checking a payroll statement and asking why the numbers did not match.<\/p>\n
Now there was somewhere for that question to go.<\/p>\n
That mattered.<\/p>\n
I walked to work.<\/p>\n
Not because everything had been repaired.<\/p>\n
Because enough had changed that work was only work again.<\/p>\n
And after everything that had happened, ordinary life did not feel small.<\/p>\n
It felt like something worth protecting.<\/p>\n
