photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a woman standing outside a grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>She looked about thirty.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>Pale eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Beside her was an older woman.<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was this taken?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole looked at Jonah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you go after them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I knew they wanted me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey needed someone to lead them to the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>My mother hadn&#39;t simply been hiding.<\/p>\n<p>She had been moving.<\/p>\n<p>Collecting what she needed.<\/p>\n<p>Destroying what she couldn&#39;t control.<\/p>\n<p>And now she had Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>She had Ella.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had been waiting for the right moment to disappear again.<\/p>\n<p>Clara called.<\/p>\n<p>I
