The sight reminded me that nothing about the previous night had been imaginary.<\/p>\n<p>She opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the chair beside her bed.<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, we said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked, \u201cDid they find Jonah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep thinking about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s been missing his whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we didn&#39;t even know he existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part is hard to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>There was no simple way to explain the cruelty of discovering that your family had been larger all along.<\/p>\n<p>Three children had been born.<\/p>\n<p>Three names had been written down.<\/p>\n<p>Then adults had decided those children could be separated, renamed, and assigned different lives.<\/p>\n<p>Clara rubbed her thumb against the edge of the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Evelyn tell you anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Jonah was moved again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoved where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we find him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re still willing to help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t ask whether she meant half-brother, adopted brother, or anything else.<\/p>\n<p>The word was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Later that morning, Arthur came to the room carrying a paper bag with breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn followed him.<\/p>\n<p>She looked exhausted but stronger than she had the night before.<\/p>\n<p>Clara sat up.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stopped at the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>For a few seconds, neither woman knew what to say.<\/p>\n<p>Then Clara whispered, \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn&#39;s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>She crossed the room slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Clara reached for her.<\/p>\n<p>Their embrace was awkward at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then it wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped outside.<\/p>\n<p>Some moments belonged to people who had lost decades together.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur joined me in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did the right thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also spent years believing her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I don&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe both let fear make decisions for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first time I understood why I couldn&#39;t simply blame my mother for everything.<\/p>\n<p>She had built the trap.<\/p>\n<p>But I had learned to live inside it.<\/p>\n<p>A detective arrived before lunch.<\/p>\n<p>She introduced herself as Detective Maren Cole.<\/p>\n<p>She had a thick folder under one arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve begun reviewing the documents recovered from Unit 17.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to expand the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there is one problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral original records are missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich ones?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree concern the children. Two concern property transfers. One concerns Beatrice&#39;s financial accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the last?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found evidence that someone accessed your marriage records before you and Clara were married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara came out of the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone requested a certified copy of your birth certificate shortly before your wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a familiar chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould it have been my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could,\u201d Detective Cole said. \u201cBut we haven&#39;t established that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed another document on the table.<\/p>\n<p>The request had been made under a false name.<\/p>\n<p>The signature looked familiar.<\/p>\n<p>I studied it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Arthur took the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s Victor&#39;s handwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what we thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Victor request my birth certificate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Because we all understood what the question implied.<\/p>\n<p>Victor hadn&#39;t merely been working for Beatrice.<\/p>\n<p>He had been searching for Clara.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe long before any of us knew why.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole said she needed to speak with Victor again.<\/p>\n<p>He was being held nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur wanted to go.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>Clara caught my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t go because you&#39;re angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo because you want the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>At the police station, Victor sat behind a glass partition.<\/p>\n<p>He looked older than he had at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Tired.<\/p>\n<p>Not frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur sat across from him.<\/p>\n<p>I remained beside the detective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Clara was Evelyn&#39;s daughter,\u201d Arthur said.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Beatrice ordered me to find the Ellis children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was afraid one of them would remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother&#39;s family owned a property outside town. Children were kept there temporarily while records were changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere Clara and Jonah there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew they were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you did nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer sounded painfully familiar.<\/p>\n<p>He told us that Clara and Jonah had been separated after Evelyn disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Ella was sent to another family.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah was moved to a private institution.<\/p>\n<p>Clara was eventually brought back into Beatrice&#39;s circle.<\/p>\n<p>But there was something Victor couldn&#39;t explain.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah&#39;s file had vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Not lost.<\/p>\n<p>Removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d Detective Cole asked.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t want Jonah found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knew something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe remembered the night Evelyn disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked toward the detective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe saw who took her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s hands tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor gave an address.<\/p>\n<p>It belonged to an old boarding facility nearly two hundred miles away.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll verify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we left, Victor called after me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think your mother was afraid of the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was afraid of the person who created them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Victor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside the station, Arthur stared at the pavement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father died before I understood what he had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was documenting crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he was part of the system before he tried to expose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That possibility changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook might not have been a record of wrongdoing discovered from outside.<\/p>\n<p>It might have been a record written by someone who had been inside.<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Clara was waiting.<\/p>\n<p>I told her about Jonah.<\/p>\n<p>She stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen do we leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou aren&#39;t going anywhere yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am if he&#39;s my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor entered at that moment.<\/p>\n<p>He took one look at her and sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not traveling today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a brother missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you&#39;re carrying a pregnancy that needs monitoring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I could see the argument forming.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll find him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara studied my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost said yes.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered her warning.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t promise.<\/p>\n<p>So I answered differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you&#39;ll bring me everything you learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Detective Cole called.<\/p>\n<p>They had found the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah had lived there under another name.<\/p>\n<p>But when officers arrived, he was gone.<\/p>\n<p>He had left three days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>On his bed, they found one envelope.<\/p>\n<p>It was addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it with shaking hands.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photograph of three children.<\/p>\n<p>On the back were six words.<\/p>\n<p>I know what she
