Instead, it felt like standing in a room after someone had removed all the furniture and realizing you had no idea where to put yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Mom seemed to feel it too.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, she made dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>Chicken, potatoes, green beans.<\/p>\n<p>She moved around the kitchen quietly, opening cabinets and checking the oven as though she had been doing it every night for years.<\/p>\n<p>Noah sat at the table with a textbook open in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Mom place three plates on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had always sat at the fourth place.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the empty chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost put one there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Noah closed his book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I&#39;m ready to stop setting a place for someone who isn&#39;t coming home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We ate quietly.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner, Noah disappeared upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Mom washed the dishes.<\/p>\n<p>I dried them.<\/p>\n<p>It was such a normal evening that I almost forgot how impossible normal had once seemed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom asked, \u201cWhat are you going to do with the letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad&#39;s letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She dried her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted you to have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish he&#39;d given it to me himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We stood there for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cYour father wasn&#39;t good at saying what he felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, I went into the spare room where we had stored the remaining evidence from the case.<\/p>\n<p>I had promised myself I would organize everything eventually.<\/p>\n<p>Now I opened one box.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photographs, bank records, copies of court filings, Dad&#39;s letters, and the original police inventory.<\/p>\n<p>I almost closed it again.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I began sorting.<\/p>\n<p>Some documents belonged to Mom&#39;s defense.<\/p>\n<p>Others belonged to the financial investigation.<\/p>\n<p>A few were personal.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found a small envelope I had never seen.<\/p>\n<p>It was marked with a date from three days before Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>There was no name.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a handwritten list.<\/p>\n<p>Three names.<\/p>\n<p>Greg.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Price.<\/p>\n<p>Beside each name was a short note.<\/p>\n<p>I knew two of them.<\/p>\n<p>But beside Eleanor&#39;s name, Dad had written:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnows more than she believes she knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor had already told us what she remembered.<\/p>\n<p>But the wording bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>I called her the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>She answered cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered when you would find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the note?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did you know I would call?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, she said, \u201cYour father told me there were things he couldn&#39;t explain yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if he died, you might eventually come looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the note again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he investigating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wrote down the name.<\/p>\n<p>It was unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Greg involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw paperwork. I didn&#39;t understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart skipped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I mean the paperwork was stored somewhere in his office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Dad&#39;s old desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe searched that office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not carefully enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hung up.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was standing in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>She listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something I hadn&#39;t expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t turn this into another investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father is gone. Greg is in prison. Your life is finally yours again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if Dad left something important\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also left instructions to protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew she was right.<\/p>\n<p>But the question had already taken root.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon, I returned to Dad&#39;s old office.<\/p>\n<p>The desk had been moved slightly when the house was sold, but Mom had kept several pieces of furniture.<\/p>\n<p>I examined the drawers.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the underside.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Dad&#39;s habit.<\/p>\n<p>He always kept important documents somewhere he believed nobody would look.<\/p>\n<p>Not in a safe.<\/p>\n<p>Not in a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Inside books.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled books from the shelf one by one.<\/p>\n<p>Most contained nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached an old accounting manual.<\/p>\n<p>The pages were hollowed out.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small key.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>A paper label was attached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c17.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>It was the same number from the old storage records we had found during the original investigation.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that number before.<\/p>\n<p>But I had never understood why Dad kept returning to it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom came into the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the key.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Dad&#39;s book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we should leave it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then she sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don&#39;t go alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah insisted on coming.<\/p>\n<p>We drove to the storage facility listed in the old records.<\/p>\n<p>The manager checked the key against an archived unit number.<\/p>\n<p>There was still one storage locker associated with Dad&#39;s old account.<\/p>\n<p>It had never been cleared.<\/p>\n<p>The manager led us down a narrow corridor.<\/p>\n<p>At the end was a metal door.<\/p>\n<p>Number 17.<\/p>\n<p>I inserted the key.<\/p>\n<p>The lock turned.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a wooden box.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>No money.<\/p>\n<p>No weapons.<\/p>\n<p>No dramatic secret.<\/p>\n<p>Just a box.<\/p>\n<p>I carried it outside.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat in the car waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Noah stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the lid.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were documents wrapped in brown paper.<\/p>\n<p>And on top was another letter from Dad.<\/p>\n<p>This one was addressed to Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I handed it to her.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at her name.<\/p>\n<p>Then she opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed as she read.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father knew he might not survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says there is one thing he never told us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at the box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says the truth about Greg was only part of what he discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=15776\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Box Dad Hid Before His Death Contained One Last Secret, and Mom Finally Learned Why He Had Kept Her in the Dark<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The courthouse steps emptied slowly after Greg was taken away.
