He had been found upstairs, crying and disoriented. He remembered sirens. He remembered people in the house. He remembered our father being gone.

But his early statements had been confused.

The adults around him had assumed trauma had scrambled his memory.

Nobody had expected him to remember the kitchen.

Nobody had expected him to remember Greg.

“What happened next?” I asked.

Noah rubbed his thumb across the folded edge of the uneven.

“Dad said something.”

“What?”

“I can't remember exactly.”

“Try.”

He squeezed the paper.

“Greg said Dad couldn't tell anybody.”

“Tell anybody what?”

“I don't know.”

Mom's face had gone pale.

I looked at her.

“You knew?”

She shook her head slowly.

“I knew your father was frightened near the end.”

“You never told me.”

“You wouldn't have listened.”

The words landed harder than I expected.

Because she was right.

For six years, I had listened only to the evidence that confirmed what I already believed.

Noah suddenly whispered, “There was a knife.”

I felt cold.

“Where?”

“In Dad's hand.”

Mom leaned closer to the glass.

“Noah.”

“He wasn't holding it when Uncle Greg left.”

Silence filled the room.

I thought about the original case.

The knife under Mom's car seat.

Her fingerprints.

The blood.

The arguments.

Every detail suddenly seemed less solid than it had that morning.

A guard stepped toward us.

Our time was almost over.

I turned to him.

“We need someone from the legal office.”

He frowned.

“For what?”

“My brother remembers something about the murder.”

The guard glanced at Noah.

“You'll need to make that request through the proper process.”

“Her execution is scheduled for today.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don't.”

My voice cracked.

I lowered it immediately.

“My brother says he saw our uncle at the scene.”

The guard's expression changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

He stepped outside and spoke to another officer.

Mom watched me.

“Don't do this because you feel guilty.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Don't suddenly believe me because you're afraid.”

“I don't know what I believe.”

“That is different.”

Noah pressed his palm against the glass again.

“I remember one more thing.”

We both looked at him.

“What?”

He took a shaky breath.

“Greg told me not to tell.”

“Tell what?”

“The truth.”

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

Noah continued.

“He looked at me before he left.”

“What did he say?”

Noah's voice became barely audible.

“He said, ‘You can't tell them what you saw.’”

I felt something inside me break loose.

That sentence was not a complete explanation.

It wasn't proof.

But it was something the original case had never contained.

A witness.

A child.

A memory buried beneath trauma.

And a name.

Within an hour, the execution was placed on an emergency hold.

The official reason was simple: newly surfaced information required immediate review.

But inside that prison, nothing felt simple.

Mom sat alone in her cell.

Noah and I were taken to separate rooms.

Detectives arrived.

A lawyer arrived.

Questions came faster than Noah could answer them.

Did he remember Greg's clothes?

Did he remember where he stood?

Did he remember whether Mom was present?

Could he identify the kitchen?

What had his father said?

What had Greg said?

Some answers were clear.

Others were fragments.

But the fragments connected.

Noah described the blue shirt.

He described Greg standing near the counter.

He described Dad stepping backward.

He described the knife.

And he repeatedly said the same thing.

“Mom wasn't there when it happened.”

The investigators asked whether anyone had talked to him about Greg.

He said no.

They asked whether anyone had shown him photographs.

Again, no.

Then a detective asked why he had drawn the picture.

Noah looked down.

“A counselor asked me to draw what I remembered.”

“When?”

“A few months ago.”

“Why didn't you tell anyone then?”

Noah's eyes filled.

“Because I wasn't sure.”

That answer stayed with me.

He hadn't been trying to save Mom.

He hadn't been trying to accuse Greg.

He had simply been trying to understand a memory that had returned piece by piece.

That evening, I sat alone in a hallway outside the legal offices.

My phone kept vibrating.

News outlets had somehow learned that the execution had been delayed.

I ignored every call.

Then a lawyer approached me.

“We found something.”

I stood.

“What?”

He held a thin folder.

“Your father had a life-insurance policy.”

“I know.”

“You know about the policy that paid your mother?”

“Yes.”

“There was another policy.”

I stared at him.

“How much?”

He hesitated.

“A substantial amount.”

“Who was the beneficiary?”

He opened the folder.

Then looked directly at me.

“Your father changed it three months before he
