It was not only gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she write to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know that either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read the letter again.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a phone number.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should probably let me investigate first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he added, \u201cThere is one other thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur&#39;s original estate file contains a reference to a document called the Willow Account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never heard of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither had I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was listed in an inventory prepared shortly before Arthur died. But it isn&#39;t in the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside his office, traffic moved steadily along the street.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary life continued.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, something old had started moving again.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned home, Beatrice was asleep.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her for several minutes before waking her.<\/p>\n<p>She opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look troubled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarrison found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She immediately became eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer sounded rehearsed.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know enough to understand that opening old doors can let more than memories out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cEvelyn believed Arthur was hiding something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she accuse him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word landed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The missing document.<\/p>\n<p>The Willow Account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Arthur involved in something illegal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she corrected herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard Beatrice say those words about her husband.<\/p>\n<p>Not once.<\/p>\n<p>She looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She squeezed my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things Arthur didn&#39;t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he thought protecting me meant keeping me ignorant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Julian.<\/p>\n<p>The irony was almost unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn accused him of hiding money connected to the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did he leave the house to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe because he knew someone would eventually come looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night, I couldn&#39;t sleep.<\/p>\n<p>At two in the morning, I went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The house was dark.<\/p>\n<p>I switched on the kitchen light.<\/p>\n<p>The refrigerator hummed.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee tin sat on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed at myself.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Arthur&#39;s file.<\/p>\n<p>The Willow Account.<\/p>\n<p>I went to the study.<\/p>\n<p>The room still smelled faintly of old books and cedar.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The drawers were empty except for stationery and pens.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered something Beatrice had said years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur never trusted desk drawers.<\/p>\n<p>I stood still.<\/p>\n<p>There was another desk in the house.<\/p>\n<p>The old writing desk in the attic.<\/p>\n<p>I climbed the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Dust coated the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Moonlight entered through the small window.<\/p>\n<p>The desk was exactly where I remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled open the first drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Second.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Third.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom drawer stuck.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled harder.<\/p>\n<p>It opened with a wooden crack.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a narrow metal box.<\/p>\n<p>No lock.<\/p>\n<p>No label.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook as I lifted the lid.<\/p>\n<p>There was only one item inside.<\/p>\n<p>A small black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>On the first page, Arthur had written three words.<\/p>\n<p>For Clara, someday.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Then I opened the next page.<\/p>\n<p>And the next.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Addresses.<\/p>\n<p>The final page contained one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>If they come for the house, do not trust anyone who says they are acting for the family.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The front door.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had entered the
