look closely at me.<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice reached toward the side table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring me the green folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat green folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one you weren&#39;t supposed to know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie stepped this calmly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the stranger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Keller, did my son tell you what I was signing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it was a transfer of interest in the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd did he tell you that I have another will?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian recovered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s irrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Beatrice said. \u201cIt is the only relevant thing in this room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went to the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Under the sink, the coffee tin waited exactly where I had left it.<\/p>\n<p>I picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>The weight surprised me even though I knew front of him.<\/p>\n<p>I had not spent a dollar.<\/p>\n<p>I had not deposited a dollar.<\/p>\n<p>I had not even opened the envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie looked frightened now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, this is manipulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice slowly turned her chair toward her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie&#39;s voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe created a fake caregiver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe created one because my son refused to pay his wife for years of work,\u201d Beatrice replied.<\/p>\n<p>Julian snapped, \u201cThis isn&#39;t about Clara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has always been about Clara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped toward the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re giving her the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Beatrice said.<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>His expression became more serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Hayes, this appears to be properly executed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian laughed.<\/p>\n<p>It was a strange sound.<\/p>\n<p>Short.<\/p>\n<p>Dry.<\/p>\n<p>Almost desperate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re telling me my father left this house to my wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Clara Hayes,\u201d the notary said.<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Something inside him seemed to collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Then anger replaced it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my family&#39;s home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice&#39;s eyes you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Beatrice said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been the only person who stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached into my bag and placed three notebooks on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the first.<\/p>\n<p>Medication schedules.<\/p>\n<p>The second contained meal plans.<\/p>\n<p>The third contained appointment notes, pharmacy receipts, blood sugar readings, dates of falls, changes in symptoms, and records of every night Beatrice had been sick.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to a page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarch fourteenth. Fever at 2:10 a.m. Called doctor at 2:37.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApril second. Physical therapy at nine. Julian said he would drive her. He did not come home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay twenty-first. Pharmacy bill paid from my account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I kept going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune ninth.
