Words arrived before thought.<\/p>\n<p>This was different.<\/p>\n<p>This anger seemed to have frozen him.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas broke the silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much of the twins\u2019 college fund is gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia rubbed her palms over her skirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t a number,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-three thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took one step backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account had eighty-one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lost seventy-three thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t lose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas asked, \u201cThen where is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia\u2019s eyes moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark gave a short laugh that contained no amusement at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it would grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Mark gripped the back of his chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce introduced me to somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That name again.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Keller had begun the morning as a realtor with an inconvenient interest in my crown molding.<\/p>\n<p>Now his name sat in the middle of almost every trail we followed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas uncapped his pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of investment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia shook her head. \u201cI don\u2019t know exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at her. \u201cYou put seventy-three thousand dollars of our children\u2019s money into something you don\u2019t understand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understood it then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did you give him first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-three.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-three thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Almost everything.<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him and felt an old maternal reflex rise inside me. I wanted to put a hand on his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered his voice in the car.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>He had not known about the missing college money.<\/p>\n<p>I believed that.<\/p>\n<p>He had not known Alicia had invented medical claims about me.<\/p>\n<p>I believed that too.<\/p>\n<p>But he had known enough to come here intending to persuade me into leaving my home.<\/p>\n<p>He was wounded.<\/p>\n<p>He was not innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas asked Alicia, \u201cWas Bruce financially involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe introduced us. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he receive money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you pay him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel Cross promise a specific return?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas wrote that down too.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at his wife. \u201cWhen did this start?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast spring?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have known for months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I could fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The answer was so plain she did not need to say it.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>I folded my hands.<\/p>\n<p>The strange thing about betrayal is that after enough pieces appear, new ones stop shocking you individually. They simply enlarge the shape.<\/p>\n<p>Mark pulled out a chair and sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twins apply next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me keep talking about campuses and tuition and scholarships while the account was empty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight thousand dollars is basically empty compared with what we saved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to replace it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked again at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas followed her gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the sale of Dorothy\u2019s house was intended to cover the missing college money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia wiped her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the pocket call.<\/p>\n<p>The lake.<\/p>\n<p>The boat.<\/p>\n<p>Everything.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard fragments I still did not fully understand.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to be careful not to reveal how I knew them.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward Bruce\u2019s valuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Bruce visited, he talked about the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia froze.<\/p>\n<p>It was a gamble.<\/p>\n<p>Mark frowned. \u201cWhat lake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued before she could examine my wording too closely. \u201cHe mentioned boats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>He knew I was maneuvering around something.<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned to Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat boat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is Mom asking about one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let the subject go.<\/p>\n<p>Too much pressure would reveal my advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gathered the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need copies of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia immediately stood. \u201cGive me the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>Firm.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>For eleven years, I had allowed her to call me Mother D.<\/p>\n<p>I had tolerated the hand pats.<\/p>\n<p>The sweet voice.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny corrections.<\/p>\n<p>The assumption that because I avoided arguments, I could be pushed indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis folder came into my home,\u201d I said. \u201cIt contains information about my property, my finances, a medical condition I don\u2019t have, and a signature I say I did not write.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed my palm over the cover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt stays here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother D\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Dorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>I had never corrected her before.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I should have.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas placed the folder inside his briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re finished for today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia snatched up her coat.<\/p>\n<p>Mark remained seated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAren\u2019t you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, husband and wife stared at each other across my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Then Alicia walked out.<\/p>\n<p>The front door slammed hard enough to shake the small framed photograph beside the hallway mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Through the window, I saw Eleanor\u2019s curtain move.<\/p>\n<p>Still watching.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas waited until Alicia\u2019s car backed from the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Mark did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were red.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know about the college fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>Only briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew about Silver Meadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew the house was supposed to be sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you came here expecting to help convince me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you had agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>The words surprised him.<\/p>\n<p>They surprised me too.<\/p>\n<p>But they were true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you thought I had already agreed, why would you need to convince me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew I might say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you came anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the apology I needed before any spoken apology could matter.<\/p>\n<p>Not excuses.<\/p>\n<p>Facts.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Bruce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas read the message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent the October ninth email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one from Alicia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas opened the attachment.<\/p>\n<p>The first file was familiar.<\/p>\n<p>The document containing the signature I denied making.<\/p>\n<p>The second file had a meaningless filename made of numbers and letters.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas opened it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed because Thomas rarely allowed his face to do much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He enlarged the document.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared across the top.<\/p>\n<p>Below it were columns.<\/p>\n<p>Property.<\/p>\n<p>Bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Investments.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized one approximate savings balance.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Then an account I had not discussed with Mark in years.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is more than information for a property transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew before Thomas answered.<\/p>\n<p>An inventory.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had catalogued my financial life.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>My savings.<\/p>\n<p>My retirement accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Even the approximate cash value of an old insurance policy.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, someone had written a total.<\/p>\n<p>$412,600.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at the number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Alicia get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because another question had already displaced his.<\/p>\n<p>The amount was too accurate to be guessed.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody had seen information that should have been private.<\/p>\n<p>And only a very small number of people could possibly have known where to find it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
