They know about the trust, but they also know the kitchen leaks when it rains. They know we were separated, but they also know we argue about whose turn it is to cook.”

Ella laughed.

“That's true.”

“They need ordinary memories too.”

She nodded.

“That's what I was writing.”

A few days later, the youngest generation gathered at the cottage without the older adults.

They had planned something themselves.

When I arrived, I found folding chairs arranged beneath the trees.

A large sheet of paper had been attached to the porch wall.

Across the top, someone had written:

WHAT SHOULD WE KEEP?

I laughed.

“What is this?”

A young woman stepped forward.

“We want to talk about the future.”

I looked around.

There were perhaps fifteen of them.

Some were children we had watched grow up.

Others were adults with families of their own.

They had inherited our history.

Now they were deciding what to do with it.

“You don't need our permission to have an opinion.”

“We know.”

“Good.”

One of them handed me a chair.

“Sit.”

I sat.

They began with simple questions.

Should the archive remain?

Yes.

Should the cottage remain available for family gatherings?

Mostly everyone agreed.

Should every document be preserved?

There was debate.

One young man said, “Some things are private.”

Another said, “But if we destroy them, we lose history.”

I watched them argue.

Neither side was wrong.

That was the difficult part.

Finally, one of the older grandchildren turned to me.

“What would you do?”

I smiled.

“You're asking the wrong person.”

“Why?”

“Because I belong to the generation that made the decisions you're now questioning.”

She considered that.

“So what should we ask?”

I looked around the circle.

“Ask yourselves what you want to inherit.”

They became quiet.

The young woman holding the marker wrote the question on the paper.

WHAT DO WE WANT TO INHERIT?

Then they started again.

They wanted the house.

But not because it was valuable.

They wanted the creek protected.

They wanted the archive preserved.

They wanted the freedom to change the house when necessary.

They wanted the annual gathering to continue.

They wanted the stories recorded.

They wanted private family matters to remain private.

They wanted future children to know Evelyn without being defined by her.

I listened.

Every answer made me feel a little lighter.

They were not simply accepting what we had built.

They were examining it.

That was exactly what we had hoped for.

At the end, one of them asked, “Can we change the agreement someday?”

“Yes.”

“Even if you don't like it?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

He looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because it belongs to you too.”

Ella nodded.

“The point was never to make the future obey us.”

That afternoon, they planted another tree.

They chose the spot themselves.

It was farther from the original three maples.

A young oak.

One of the children brought a small wooden marker.

Instead of a name, they carved the year.

Nothing else.

I asked why.

The boy shrugged.

“We'll decide what it means later.”

I laughed.

“That may be the wisest thing anyone has said today.”

When the tree was planted, everyone stood around it.

The roots were small.

The trunk was thin.

It looked fragile.

But so had the three maples decades earlier.

I wondered whether someone would stand beneath that oak fifty years from then.

Perhaps they would wonder who planted it.

Perhaps they would never know.

That was fine.

Not everything needed a plaque.

Some things simply needed a chance to grow.

That evening, after everyone left, I stayed outside.

The new oak stood against the fading sky.

Ella joined me.

“They're ready.”

“For what?”

“To take over.”

I smiled.

“Not yet.”

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

We had spent decades protecting the house.

Now we had to trust the people who would inherit it.

Trust was harder than control.

Control gave you the illusion of certainty.

Trust required accepting that someone else might choose differently.

But we had learned that lesson long ago.

“I think Evelyn would approve,” Ella said.

“Of the tree?”

“Of the freedom.”

I nodded.

The next morning, Jonah arrived carrying an old wooden box.

“Where did you get that?”

“Workshop.”

“What's inside?”

“I don't know.”

I stared at him.

“You brought a mystery box into this house?”

He laughed.

“Relax.”

He opened it.

Inside were tools.

Old nails.

A rusted hinge.

A broken measuring tape.

Nothing important.

Then he lifted a false bottom.

Underneath was a small stack of photographs.

I recognized the cottage.

Different years.

Different people.

Different seasons.

There was one photograph of the three of us standing on the porch when we were much younger.

I had forgotten it existed.

Jonah looked at it.

“We should put this in the archive.”

“Yes.”

“But not alone.”

“What do you mean?”

He pointed toward the new oak outside.

“We should put the photograph of the oak beside it someday.”

I smiled.

“Why?”

“So they'll see that the story kept growing.”

That afternoon, we added the photograph to the archive.

Beside it, we placed a blank space.

No caption.

No explanation.

Just room for the next generation.

I liked that more than any plaque we had ever installed.

Years ago, I had believed preserving a story meant recording every detail.

Now I understood that preservation also meant leaving room for new ones.

The cottage did not belong only to the past.

It belonged to whatever happened next.

That night, I stood in the doorway of the archive.

The old photograph rested beneath the soft light.

The new agreement sat beside it.

The pendant was in its case.

The brass key was nearby.

Everything that had once frightened me had become part of an ordinary collection.

Objects.

Paper.

Names.

Memory.

I closed the cabinet.

Then I looked toward the open doorway.

I left it unlocked.

The next generation could come in whenever they wanted.

They did not need me standing guard.

That was perhaps the final thing I had to learn.

The story was safe.

Not because I was still protecting it.

Because it no longer needed protection from the people who loved it.
