Mom caught me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Juli\u00e1n had tried to take the house from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel spoke before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is inaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said he bought the debt so he could control her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe acquired the distressed mortgage so the lender would not foreclose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said he planned to throw her out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no instruction in the documents I prepared authorizing anything like that during her compliance with the repayment agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I watched understanding reach her in stages.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had not only lied to me.<\/p>\n<p>She had built separate versions of the same story for each daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened today?\u201d Officer Rojas asked.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria drew in a shaky breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom found out Clara was meeting Mr. Ortega.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying things after they matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rojas kept the conversation moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe went upstairs and opened the closet. She started removing papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she say what she intended to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said we had to get rid of anything that could be misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel muttered something under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her to stop. She said I was choosing Clara over the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A bitter laugh escaped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently telling the truth is choosing sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to take the papers from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when the argument became physical?\u201d Rojas asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe shoved me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you strike her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she strike you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She pushed past me and went downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the fireplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt already had a small fire. She threw in a stack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much burned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grabbed some out with the tongs. Then she tried to take them back. That\u2019s when I called emergency services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the papers now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rojas pointed toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the dining table. We preserved what we could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had turned the same dining room where she slapped Mateo into a place filled with police photographs, evidence bags, and half-burned documents.<\/p>\n<p>The symmetry felt cruel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I see them?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some may become evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rojas looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotential fraud. We don\u2019t know enough yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words sounded enormous.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had always made wrongdoing inside the family seem small.<\/p>\n<p>A slap.<\/p>\n<p>A missing document.<\/p>\n<p>A lie.<\/p>\n<p>A signature.<\/p>\n<p>Separated, each could be explained away.<\/p>\n<p>Together, they were beginning to look like a system.<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa appeared between two officers.<\/p>\n<p>She was not handcuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Some irrational part of me had expected her to be.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she looked like my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Her hair was pinned neatly.<\/p>\n<p>Her blouse was buttoned.<\/p>\n<p>Only her face betrayed the strain.<\/p>\n<p>She saw Samuel first.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought him here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou brought him here six years ago when you started hiding his letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She descended one step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what that man helped your husband do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s voice remained level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped Juli\u00e1n document an agreement you signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat agreement was coercion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were represented by separate counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took advantage of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were facing foreclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my son-in-law saw an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more versions. No more stories about what everyone else did to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think he was some saint?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised her.<\/p>\n<p>I surprised myself too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuli\u00e1n hid things from me. I\u2019m angry about that. But he\u2019s dead.
