We complete a report because he disclosed previous physical handling and because of tonight\u2019s injury. Then we determine whether returning to that residence is appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill police come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother is going to say I\u2019m exaggerating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she can say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was such a simple answer that I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>In my family, my mother\u2019s denial usually became the beginning of a trial where everyone else had to defend what they knew.<\/p>\n<p>Here, apparently, she could deny reality without reality disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Mateo came over holding his drawing.<\/p>\n<p>The car filled almost the entire page.<\/p>\n<p>One wheel lay beside it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Daddy\u2019s,\u201d he told Elena.<\/p>\n<p>She crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the wheel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDami\u00e1n dropped it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he give the car back afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateo looked confused by the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Mom picked it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached into my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The little car was still there.<\/p>\n<p>So was the broken wheel.<\/p>\n<p>Mateo touched them carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we fix it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou promise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he turned to Elena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad gave it to me before he went away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something changed in her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did your dad go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateo looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma didn\u2019t like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>Elena remained still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes you say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says his name makes trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my son.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had never said that around me.<\/p>\n<p>At least, not that I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else does Grandma say about your dad?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mateo glanced at me as though checking whether he was allowed to answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says we wouldn\u2019t be poor if you listened to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My face burned.<\/p>\n<p>Elena touched my forearm lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara, let him finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateo rolled the broken wheel between his fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told Aunt Valeria Daddy left problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problems?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she say anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>Then, almost as an afterthought, he said, \u201cShe said the house would be easier when I stop asking questions about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat questions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateo looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Grandpa\u2019s box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed vaguely, as children do when describing a place that exists clearly in their own minds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe little metal one in Grandma\u2019s closet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen any metal box.<\/p>\n<p>Elena noticed my confusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMateo, how did you see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was hiding from Dami\u00e1n.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned in concentration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Daddy\u2019s name was on the paper under it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat changed.<\/p>\n<p>Juli\u00e1n had been dead six years.<\/p>\n<p>My mother claimed she had thrown away everything of his that remained in her house shortly after the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat paper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it have words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich words did you recognize?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateo thought for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cDaddy\u2019s name. My name.
