sold.

She expected Mom to sign under pressure.

When Mom refused, Ralph planned to use the criminal accusations against Valeria and Mom as leverage.

Sign the river.

The same area where Marianne had been found.

Police searched it.

Trevor was gone.

But inside they found medication packaging, cash, pharmacy transfer cases, and records linking shipments to Leonard.

They also found photographs.

Dozens.

Mom entering work.

Marianne leaving home.

Eric at school.

Ralph outside our apartment.

Me and Valeria.

Someone had been documenting everyone.

“Leonard?” Mom asked.

“That's one possibility.”

One photograph showed Ralph meeting Trevor.

Another showed Trevor meeting Leonard.

Then Shah placed down a picture that made Mom stop breathing.

It showed our grandfather.

Mom's father.

The picture was old.

At least several years.

He stood outside the same pharmacy where Mom now worked.

On the back, someone had written:

Carter knew.

Mom whispered, “My father died before Ralph ever moved in.”

Shah nodded.

The operation was older than Ralph.

Older than
