Then when the big lie comes, it feels familiar.”

That was Ralph.

He had been doing it inside our family for years.

Valeria was perfect but arrogant.

I was dramatic.

Mom was forgetful.

Tiny stories.

Repeated until they became expectations.

Detective Shah received a message and looked toward Mom.

“Corporate security found another discrepancy.”

“What?”

“Leonard Voss had override access to inventory adjustments.”

Mom nodded.

“He would.”

“Several missing-medication events were closed using his credentials.”

“How many?”

“Twelve.”

The number silenced us.

Twelve discrepancies across four pharmacies.

Not one bottle.

Not one store.

A pattern.

Some losses went back nearly two years.

Ralph had entered Mom’s life before that, but his connection to Marianne was more recent.

That meant the operation might have existed before either of them became involved.

Leonard could be higher up.

Trevor could be distribution.

Marianne could provide store access.

Ralph could be helping move product and laundering blame through Mom’s credentials.

I asked, “Then why did they need our apartment?”

Mom answered before Shah.

“Because Ralph wanted more.”

Greed layered on greed.

He was making money from stolen pills and still wanted our home.

Marianne expected part of it.

Maybe Trevor expected something too.

The frame-up wasn't the entire criminal scheme.

It was Ralph's private side project built on top of one.

That afternoon, corporate investigators quietly examined Leonard’s records.

They found unusual adjustments whenever he visited Mom’s pharmacy.

Inventory would appear short.

Then numbers were corrected under administrative override.

Sometimes drugs physically disappeared without the computer showing a permanent loss.

Someone had learned how to make theft look like bookkeeping noise.

Mom whispered, “That's why I thought I was making mistakes.”

Marianne had told her she counted wrong.

Ralph told her she was tired.

Leonard’s system made the numbers support the lie.

For months, three people had made Mom distrust her own work.

I hated them for that almost as much as for what they did to Valeria.

Around four in the afternoon, Detective Shah received another update.

Police had located Trevor’s vehicle.

Abandoned beneath an overpass.

No Trevor.

No Marianne.

There was blood in the passenger seat.

Mom turned away.

“Is it hers?”

“Testing will determine that.”

They found zip ties in the trunk.

A blanket.

Two prepaid phones.

One phone had been wiped.

The other had not.

Trevor had apparently been in too much of a hurry.

Its messages connected him directly to Eric.

They also connected him to someone saved only as LV.

Leonard Voss.

The messages were short.

Deliveries.

Amounts.

Meeting places.

One from three weeks earlier said:

Brooklyn girl becoming a problem.

Leonard replied:

Then remove the problem.

Mom stared.

“Brooklyn girl?”

Shah cautioned us.

“We don't know whom that refers to.”

But Mom did.

“Marianne.”

Maybe.

Or Ellen.

Or Valeria.

There were too many women Trevor could consider problems.

Another message was more specific.

Ralph wants out after deed.

LV replied:

Ralph doesn't decide when he's out.

That changed Ralph's position again.

He wasn't in charge.

The anonymous message had told the truth about that.

But it didn't make him innocent.

He had willingly joined something dangerous.

Then tried to use it against us.

Shah's phone rang again.

She listened.

“Where?”

A pause.

“Alive?”

Mom stood.

Shah closed her eyes briefly.

Then looked at us.

“They found Marianne.”

She was alive.

A delivery driver had discovered her behind a warehouse in Queens.

Her wrists were bound.

She had a head injury and had lost blood, but she was conscious.

Police transported her to a hospital under guard.

Mom sat slowly.

“Did she say who did it?”

“Not yet.”

That answer lasted twelve minutes.

Then Shah received the first statement Marianne gave paramedics.

Trevor had attacked her.

She claimed Ralph had warned her the operation was collapsing.

She planned to turn herself in.

Trevor discovered that.

“He tried to kill her?” Valeria asked.

“That's her account.”

“Does she know where Trevor is?”

“She says no.”

Mom didn't believe that.

Neither did I.

Then Marianne asked for something.

Not a lawyer.

Not Ralph.

She asked to speak with Ellen.

Mom looked stunned.

“Me?”

Shah nodded.

“She says she has information about your daughters.”

Valeria and I looked at each other.

Mom said, “Tell her to give it to the police.”

“She refuses.”

“Then she can keep refusing.”

Shah didn't pressure her.

But five minutes later another message arrived from the hospital.

Marianne had added one sentence.

Tell Ellen the school wasn't the first time Ralph used one of the girls.

Mom's face lost all color.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody knew.

Then I remembered something.

Last summer.

A package Ralph had asked me to carry downstairs.

He said it contained old books for a friend.

A man had collected it from me beside the building.

Gray jacket.

Baseball cap.

I had forgotten his face until now.

Leonard Voss.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: A Package I Carried for Ralph Last Summer
