The bottle had no proper return entry, but because it had reappeared before the monthly inventory report, the discrepancy could be corrected without automatically triggering an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Ralph told you to leave it alone,\u201d Shah said.<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if I made an accusation without proof, I could lose my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know that much about pharmacy procedure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, I thought he was guessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now none of us believed that.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever ask Marianne about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I was making trouble over a clerical mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom gave a small, bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me I should be grateful the bottle had turned up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah asked, \u201cWas anything else unusual that month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRalph suddenly had cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Nobody spoke during the drive.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Brooklyn slide past the window\u2014storefront lights, buses, people carrying groceries, a man walking a tiny dog in a red sweater.<\/p>\n<p>Normal life continued three feet beyond the glass.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed unfair.<\/p>\n<p>At the precinct, Detective Shah separated us for statements.<\/p>\n<p>A younger officer brought me water and told me to take my time.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t want time.<\/p>\n<p>Time was what Ralph had used.<\/p>\n<p>Months to learn Mom\u2019s routines.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks to collect information.<\/p>\n<p>Days to prepare backpacks and receipts.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted everything exposed at once.<\/p>\n<p>But questions came slowly.<\/p>\n<p>What time had I heard the door?<\/p>\n<p>How certain was I that the gloves were plastic?<\/p>\n<p>Could I describe the bottle?<\/p>\n<p>Did Ralph touch my desk before or after he made the second call?<\/p>\n<p>I answered until the events started feeling like scenes from somebody else\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Then Shah returned.<\/p>\n<p>She had a plastic evidence sleeve in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was the receipt from my bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe checked the transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom, who had been brought back into the room, leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prepaid phone card?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah placed a printed still photograph on the table.<\/p>\n<p>It came from the pharmacy\u2019s security camera.<\/p>\n<p>The image was grainy but clear enough.<\/p>\n<p>A man stood at the register six days earlier, wearing a baseball cap.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at the picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used my employee number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho rang him up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah placed down another image.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria whispered, \u201cSo she knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt strongly suggests she was involved in that transaction,\u201d Shah said. \u201cWe still need to establish exactly what she knew about the larger plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked suddenly furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe typed in my number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew it wasn\u2019t me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom closed her hands into fists.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I saw something stronger than fear in her.<\/p>\n<p>Not panic.<\/p>\n<p>Not shame.<\/p>\n<p>Anger.<\/p>\n<p>Shah continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also recovered preliminary records from Ralph\u2019s phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you find Marianne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMessages between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face became still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah chose her words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome personal. Some financial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answered the question nobody had wanted to say aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Mom didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>She asked, \u201cWere they having an affair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are messages that indicate a romantic relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom inhaled through her nose.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>No tears.<\/p>\n<p>I almost wished she would cry.<\/p>\n<p>Her calm looked heavier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least eight months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eight months.<\/p>\n<p>That meant Ralph had eaten dinner with us, complained about money, called Valeria \u201cthe perfect girl,\u201d and asked Mom to sign financial documents while secretly seeing Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>But even that wasn&#39;t the worst part.<\/p>\n<p>Shah slid another printout forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are portions of messages recovered from about three months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom read.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t see everything, but one line stood out.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen won\u2019t sign while the girls are protected.<\/p>\n<p>Another:<\/p>\n<p>We need leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria read over Mom&#39;s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>Then Shah pointed to a third message.<\/p>\n<p>It was from Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>If the older one gets caught with product, Ellen folds.<\/p>\n<p>Older one.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria.<\/p>\n<p>My sister backed away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were talking about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom reached for her.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria moved out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>Not because she was angry with Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Because she suddenly seemed to need air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey planned this three months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least some version of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the next message.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph had replied:<\/p>\n<p>And if Sophia sees anything?<\/p>\n<p>Marianne\u2019s answer was short.<\/p>\n<p>No one listens to Sophia.<\/p>\n<p>My face burned.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, all I could hear was the hum of the fluorescent light.<\/p>\n<p>They had counted on me being dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>The messy sister.<\/p>\n<p>The kid who struggled in math.<\/p>\n<p>The one who exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>The one Ralph had spent years training everyone to consider dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>My voice came out quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey planned around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom touched my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#39;t angry at her.<\/p>\n<p>I was angry at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least now we know why he went into my room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have been searching for your phone or trying to determine whether you were home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he thought I was at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in her phrasing made me look at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recovered another message sent at 10:42 this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven minutes after I had seen Ralph with the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Ralph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Marianne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the page toward us.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Sophia is here. Plan B.<\/p>\n<p>My skin turned cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt some point after your recording began, Ralph realized you were inside the apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria whispered, \u201cThen why did he leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the terrifying question.<\/p>\n<p>If Ralph had known I was home at 10:42, why hadn&#39;t he confronted me then?<\/p>\n<p>Why wait until afternoon?<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah placed one more recovered message on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne\u2019s reply.<\/p>\n<p>Let her send whatever she wants.
