I knew because she immediately closed her eyes and tried again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale, sweetheart, step away from the locker and let the officer handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear movement on Valeria\u2019s end. A man said something I couldn\u2019t make out, followed by the metallic bang of a locker door. My sister\u2019s breathing stayed close to the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not touching it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez stood beside us in the upstairs hallway, one hand already pressed to the radio at his shoulder. He spoke quietly to someone at Lincoln High School while Mom kept Valeria on the line.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the crack Ralph had made beside my bedroom latch.<\/p>\n<p>An hour earlier, that broken strip of wood had seemed like the most frightening thing in the apartment. Now it looked almost simple. Ralph had wanted my phone. He had wanted the video gone.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope was different.<\/p>\n<p>He had given it to Valeria before he knew I was home.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever was inside belonged to the plan he had started before anything went wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re opening it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom gripped my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t move closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>The silence from the phone lasted only seconds, but it stretched until I could hear the kitchen clock downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man&#39;s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Officer Benson at Lincoln High. Your daughter is fine. We\u2019ve secured the envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome appear to be pharmacy records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went still.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez stopped speaking into his radio and looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Benson continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also photocopies of identification documents and what appears to be a handwritten note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does the note say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather not have your daughter reading it aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer frightened me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s fingers tightened around mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficer, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benson lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says: \u2018Ellen knows. She made the copies.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds she seemed unable to speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not my handwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen those papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re treating everything as evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at Officer Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benson shuffled papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne photocopy appears to be your employee identification card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom touched the name tag pinned to her pharmacy uniform as though checking whether it was still there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy employee ID?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat stays in my purse when I\u2019m not wearing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez asked, \u201cHas Ralph ever had access to the purse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom gave a short, humorless breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lived in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer settled over all of us.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph hadn\u2019t needed to break into the pharmacy if he could use pieces of Mom\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p>Benson continued describing the contents. There were printed medication inventory sheets, copies of pharmacy shift schedules, and several pages showing dates beside handwritten quantities.<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t make those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez said, \u201cWe\u2019ll establish that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they\u2019re in my daughter\u2019s locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich makes the circumstances of how they got there extremely important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Ralph handing Valeria the envelope that morning.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t hidden it.<\/p>\n<p>He had made her carry it.<\/p>\n<p>That meant he expected someone eventually to find it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy put Mom\u2019s name on the outside?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez crouched slightly so we were closer to eye level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he wanted it hidden, why write her name on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd why give it to Vale instead of putting it in her backpack with the pills?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause perhaps he wanted the two things discovered separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea made my stomach twist.<\/p>\n<p>One discovery made Valeria look guilty.<\/p>\n<p>The second made Mom look involved.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph had built layers.<\/p>\n<p>If the school found only the pills, Valeria could deny knowing about them. But if police later found documents connected to Mom in Valeria\u2019s locker, the story changed.<\/p>\n<p>It could look like mother and daughter were working together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficer,\u201d Mom said quietly, \u201cI need to tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout three weeks ago, Ralph asked whether Valeria ever used my employee discount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he wanted vitamins. I told him family purchases still had to be rung through normally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked whether my employee number was enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he ask anything else about your job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom leaned against the hallway wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked how controlled medications were counted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing useful. I said they were tracked carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything about schedules? Deliveries? Storage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I complained about work at dinner. I might have mentioned when inventory happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make you responsible for what someone else did with the information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>From the phone, Valeria said, \u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sounded very young.<\/p>\n<p>Mom immediately lifted the phone closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question nearly broke something in Mom\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez intervened gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot quite yet. The officers at school need to finish taking statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom promised she would come as soon as police allowed it.<\/p>\n<p>After the call ended, the apartment became painfully quiet again.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez went downstairs to speak with the other officers.<\/p>\n<p>Mom and I remained in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Ralph was doing something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t really a question.<\/p>\n<p>Mom rubbed both hands over her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe started asking me to add him to the apartment deed last winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes snapped toward mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tried not to argue in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat on the top stair.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather left me this apartment because he wanted you girls to have something secure,\u201d she said. \u201cRalph knew that from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did he suddenly care?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said married people shouldn\u2019t keep property separate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you weren\u2019t married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was true. Ralph was my stepfather only because that was what we called him. He and Mom had been together for years, but they had never legally married.<\/p>\n<p>I had never thought the distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Ralph had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe proposed twice,\u201d Mom said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said no?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I wasn\u2019t changing the deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That wasn&#39;t exactly an answer.<\/p>\n<p>I understood anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe started talking about how much easier things would be if he could help manage our finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered him bringing Mom forms at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPower-of-attorney forms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know where the apartment documents were?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew where I used to keep copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe folder he took today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose copies are old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the real ones?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Officer Martinez downstairs before answering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a safe-deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explained why Ralph had searched the house.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn&#39;t known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought the folder was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost felt relief.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom said, \u201cBut there\u2019s something I haven\u2019t told the police yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo months ago, Ralph asked me to sign a blank sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said his insurance company needed a signature sample because he wanted to add me as a beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her thumb against her palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut later that week, one of my old checkbooks disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chill returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour checks have your signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Downstairs, Officer Martinez&#39;s radio crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to tell him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We found him in the kitchen photographing the drawers Ralph had emptied.<\/p>\n<p>Mom explained about the missing checkbook.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you notice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe seven weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you report it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called the bank. They canceled the checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Ralph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed important.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez asked, \u201cCould he have believed the account was still active?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer wrote quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have the cancellation confirmation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, I had completely forgotten sending her the video.<\/p>\n<p>Her message read:<\/p>\n<p>SOPHIA WHAT IS GOING ON???<\/p>\n<p>Then another appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Someone called my mom asking if she knows you.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanielle says somebody called her house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez immediately held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I see that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave him the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did you send your friend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message saying if something happened to me, she should show Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read Danielle\u2019s texts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle answered instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho called?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. A man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut her on speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he ask?\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle became cautious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice officer. Sophia is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Danielle said, \u201cThe man asked whether Sophia had sent me a video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he know?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez raised a finger, telling me to wait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him, Danielle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief washed through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he identify himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he was from the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the number appear on caller ID?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you send Sophia a screenshot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A moment later it arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez looked at the number.<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you recognize it?\u201d Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he called someone and read the number aloud.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat number matches the one used for the anonymous call to Lincoln High.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>The same person who had told the principal where to find the pills had called Danielle looking for my recording.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph had been in custody when Danielle received the call.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant the person helping him was still out there.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=15056\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Anonymous Caller Was Still Free, and One Detail in Ralph\u2019s Phone Records Suggested He Had Been Planning This for Months<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cDon\u2019t touch anything,\u201d Mom said into my phone.
