I could hear fragments of voices through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph tried the knob again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making this worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question escaped before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>He went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cFor your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already tried to hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand adult problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand what I recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hallway floor creaked.<\/p>\n<p>He had stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>His fist struck the door again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWHAT RECORDING?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sudden shout made me flinch.<\/p>\n<p>Downstairs, something buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph&#39;s phone.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia, listen carefully. Your sister has drugs in her backpack. The school knows it. The police are involved. If you start telling ridiculous stories, you&#39;re going to make things much worse for Valeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put them there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I heard only his breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Of course I was scared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou misunderstood what you saw,\u201d he continued. \u201cGive me the phone and I&#39;ll explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can explain it to Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then, \u201cYour mother won&#39;t believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the old Ralph.<\/p>\n<p>The one who always knew which doubt to press.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent years telling me I exaggerated. That I misunderstood things. That Valeria was smarter and Mom was too tired for my drama.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that strategy would have worked yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Not now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe already watched it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing moved outside.<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately that I had made a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>I had told him too much.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph rushed away from the door.<\/p>\n<p>His footsteps pounded downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I unlocked my phone and whispered, \u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows you have the video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay locked in your room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is he doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A crash came from downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>I pictured Ralph searching for Mom&#39;s laptop, paperwork, anything that could connect him to the stolen medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, he&#39;s breaking things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice are almost there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow almost?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, the apartment became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I crawled toward the bedroom window.<\/p>\n<p>From there I could see part of the street below.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph appeared on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>He looked left, then right.<\/p>\n<p>He was carrying a dark folder.<\/p>\n<p>I&#39;d seen it before.<\/p>\n<p>Mom kept property papers in one like it.<\/p>\n<p>But she had told me she&#39;d moved the important documents.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph hurried toward his car.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>A police cruiser turned onto our block.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second, neither he nor the officers moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ralph ran.<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly that my shoulder struck the window frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s running!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRalph!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police car accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph disappeared around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t see what happened next.<\/p>\n<p>Another cruiser arrived less than a minute later.<\/p>\n<p>Someone knocked downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stayed in my room.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had warned me not to open the door for anyone, and after the morning I&#39;d had, I wasn&#39;t about to abandon that instruction because somebody shouted through a wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay on the phone. Ask for the officer&#39;s name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>The man downstairs answered.<\/p>\n<p>Mom repeated the name to someone near her.<\/p>\n<p>A few seconds later she said, \u201cIt&#39;s okay. Let them in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees shook as I descended the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment looked different.<\/p>\n<p>A kitchen drawer had been pulled out completely and dumped onto the floor. Papers covered the tiles. One cabinet stood open.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers entered.<\/p>\n<p>One remained downstairs while the other, Officer Martinez, asked whether Ralph was still inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he threaten you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he try to enter your bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you show me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I led him upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The marks on the door surprised even me.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph had cracked the wood near the latch.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked about the video.<\/p>\n<p>I showed him.<\/p>\n<p>We watched it together.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the recording with an adult standing beside me changed something.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, part of me had still wondered whether Ralph could somehow explain everything away.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>The camera clearly showed the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>The gloves.<\/p>\n<p>The bottle.<\/p>\n<p>And his voice was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez watched the entire recording without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>When Ralph mentioned Mom&#39;s pharmacy, his expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you send this to anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom. Myself. My friend Danielle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time all day an adult had told me I&#39;d done something right.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere&#39;s Ralph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know. He ran when the police came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey searched my bag in front of the principal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey kept asking where I got the pills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told them they weren&#39;t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought nobody believed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the edge of my bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a shaky breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom showed them your video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe principal watched it. Then the police officer here watched it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone spoke to Valeria in the background.<\/p>\n<p>She covered the phone, answered them, then returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia, they said the bottle has a pharmacy inventory number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom&#39;s pharmacy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pieces were connecting exactly as Ralph had planned.<\/p>\n<p>Only now they were connecting in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of proving Valeria had stolen the pills, the bottle might prove where Ralph had obtained them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s something else,\u201d Valeria whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRalph came to school before they searched my bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The text she&#39;d sent suddenly made sense.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told the principal he&#39;d been worried about us. He said you&#39;d been acting strangely and that you&#39;d asked questions about pills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t even make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to blame me before anyone found them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>That meant Ralph hadn&#39;t simply planted evidence against Valeria.<\/p>\n<p>He had prepared another version in case something went wrong.<\/p>\n<p>And in that version, I was responsible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale, did he talk to anyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know. But the principal said the anonymous caller knew exactly which pocket to search.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez was still standing nearby.<\/p>\n<p>He had heard enough of the conversation to understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your sister whether the school recorded the call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated the question.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria asked someone.<\/p>\n<p>A minute passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then she returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have the number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez immediately took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could make the call, another officer appeared at my bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartinez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in his expression changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey caught the stepfather two blocks over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief hit me so quickly I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then the officer continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had prescription medication in his vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough that we&#39;re going to need pharmacy records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone was still against my ear.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria had heard everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Ralph do this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the damaged bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>The question had been sitting underneath everything since morning.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s job.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria&#39;s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>The pills.<\/p>\n<p>His attempt to blame me.<\/p>\n<p>Destroying all of us seemed bigger than anger over a property deed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez&#39;s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He answered, listened, and glanced toward me.<\/p>\n<p>His expression became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean, there are more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer workplace?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother is safe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>That wasn&#39;t what I&#39;d asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pharmacy checked its inventory after seeing your video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the banister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missing medication goes back several months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Months.<\/p>\n<p>Long before that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Long before Valeria&#39;s backpack.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez continued carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd according to your mother, Ralph had access to information that could have helped someone remove it without attracting attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>For one frightened second, my body reacted before my mind did.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom appeared.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t take off her coat.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t speak to the officers.<\/p>\n<p>She crossed the room, climbed the stairs, and pulled me against her so tightly that my phone slipped from my hand onto the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>I buried my face against her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lied about being sick,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Mom pulled back.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the things I could have said, that clearly wasn&#39;t what she expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t want to take my math test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one second she simply blinked.<\/p>\n<p>Then she closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll deal with the math test later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Valeria was still on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Mom picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My sister said something I couldn&#39;t hear.<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Officer Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cValeria says Ralph gave her an envelope this morning and told her to keep it in her locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas she opened it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom repeated the question.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her not to touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom did.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez was already calling the officer at the school.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>But I could see fear returning to her face.<\/p>\n<p>The pills hadn&#39;t been Ralph&#39;s only preparation.<\/p>\n<p>He had placed something else within Valeria&#39;s reach before the school day even began.<\/p>\n<p>Something separate from the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>Something he apparently needed her to keep.<\/p>\n<p>Mom squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Across the phone, I heard Valeria speaking quickly to someone at the school.<\/p>\n<p>Then she came back on the line.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey opened my locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valeria didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When she finally did, the fear in her voice was different now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe envelope has Mom&#39;s
