Removing children from dangerous homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy falsifying records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy deciding which mothers deserve their children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourts already do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you intend to influence the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI intend to give them better information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A new vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>Same power.<\/p>\n<p>Miranda believed modernization made the old machinery ethical.<\/p>\n<p>The basement door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped through wearing tactical gear.<\/p>\n<p>Not police.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Creel.<\/p>\n<p>Halcyon security.<\/p>\n<p>Gun raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNotebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz aimed at him.<\/p>\n<p>Creel smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou fire, Cross floods the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Small vents.<\/p>\n<p>Old gas system.<\/p>\n<p>The same architecture as St. Agnes.<\/p>\n<p>Miranda had prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz lowered her weapon slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Creel extended his hand.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel held Margaret\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Evelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Then a sound came from behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Metal striking bone.<\/p>\n<p>Creel dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas stood in the doorway holding Evelyn\u2019s cane.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking terrible decisions like everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He kicked Creel\u2019s gun away.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him stood two officers.<\/p>\n<p>One bleeding from the arm.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas had followed the convoy without permission and entered through the cottage after the jammer activated.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hugged him anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Only for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then the intercom clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Miranda said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A hiss began inside the vents.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz shouted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They dragged Creel upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone cleared the cottage as gas filled the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s notebook came with them.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, rain struck Rachel\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Police detained Creel.<\/p>\n<p>But Miranda was nowhere on the property.<\/p>\n<p>She had controlled the system remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Technicians began tracing the signal.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas looked toward the main house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiranda says Charles has her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we believe her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s technician ran from the command van.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got the relay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoastal warehouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same warehouse where Charles\u2019s passports had been found.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he never left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another message appeared on Rachel\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn sat tied to a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Orton stood behind her.<\/p>\n<p>The wall behind them was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>A shipping container.<\/p>\n<p>Below the image:<\/p>\n<p>BRING MARGARET\u2019S CONFESSION.<\/p>\n<p>COME WITH KAYLEE.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s face went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee had become part of the demand.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Charles needed her.<\/p>\n<p>Because he understood Rachel now.<\/p>\n<p>He knew which threat would control her.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel deleted the message from Kaylee\u2019s view before returning to the command vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>But Kaylee had already seen her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel knelt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps the first time in their relationship, the answer came without complication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=14959\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Charles Orton Demanded Kaylee for Margaret\u2019s Confession, but Rachel\u2019s Refusal Forced Him to Reveal Why the Child Terrified Halcyon More Than Any Archive<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel read Evelyn\u2019s note twice before she handed it to Ortiz.
