I\u2019m asking who hurt your feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee crushed the stuffed llama against her chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you make me go back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved my chair closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won&#39;t knowingly send you somewhere unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I admitted. \u201cIt isn&#39;t. There are people who decide where children can safely stay. But they need to know what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Mrs. Fox.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Finally at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name came out as barely more than breath.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox did not react.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to your feet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee rubbed the llama&#39;s ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took bread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse&#39;s hands stopped for half a second before continuing.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox kept her voice gentle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you told you couldn&#39;t have bread?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha said if I stole food, I couldn&#39;t have comfortable feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something cold settle in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she make you do?\u201d Mrs. Fox asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe took my shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laundry room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first I did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>Then I did.<\/p>\n<p>Dry rice.<\/p>\n<p>Hard grains beneath bare feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long did you stand on it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox glanced at me, but she did not interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil Dad came home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the late news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had to look away.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox asked the next question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your father see you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Tasha she was going too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief tried to rise in me.<\/p>\n<p>It lasted less than two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha asked if he wanted to pay for another divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox&#39;s face changed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stared at the stuffed animal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg had seen her.<\/p>\n<p>He had understood.<\/p>\n<p>And he had left.<\/p>\n<p>Through the office wall, I heard the nurse making a phone call.<\/p>\n<p>Certain words carried.<\/p>\n<p>Child disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Physical injury.<\/p>\n<p>Parent witnessed.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee heard them too.<\/p>\n<p>Her head jerked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re telling her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are getting help,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t call the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;ll clean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClean what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>No question could pull the answer from her.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox eventually pushed a sheet of paper across the desk with several crayons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to say it. Can you draw it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee chose black.<\/p>\n<p>She drew a house.<\/p>\n<p>Then stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then a hallway.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the hallway she made a rectangle.<\/p>\n<p>She colored it so heavily that the black crayon snapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quiet room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody interrupted her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho goes into the quiet room?\u201d Mrs. Fox asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mattress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bucket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox asked, \u201cCan you open the door from inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the lock?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen were you there last?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThursday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe night before your sleepover?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the bread?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox unfolded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha punished you because of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting looked nothing like an eight-year-old&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox pointed that out carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made me practice hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee lifted both hands.<\/p>\n<p>Ten fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Then she lowered them and lifted them again.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty.<\/p>\n<p>I understood before anyone said it.<\/p>\n<p>The note had not merely been a warning.<\/p>\n<p>It was insurance.<\/p>\n<p>If Kaylee arrived somewhere with suspicious injuries, there would already be a written reason to distrust anything she said.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could absorb that, a car door slammed outside.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee flinched so violently that crayons rolled off the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Greg appeared through the office windows.<\/p>\n<p>Tasha followed.<\/p>\n<p>Greg pushed through the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot interrupt a safeguarding interview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we&#39;re addressing a serious concern about her safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze found the grocery bag.<\/p>\n<p>The pink sneakers were visible through the plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed across his face.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Then shame.<\/p>\n<p>Tasha noticed it too.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Kaylee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere you are, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee began trembling.<\/p>\n<p>Tasha stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>I moved between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tasha&#39;s eyes settled on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sure you meant well inviting her over, but Kaylee has a history of inventing things when she wants attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox held up the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Smooth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe imitates my handwriting,\u201d Tasha added. \u201cHer therapist has been working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat therapist?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Helen Morris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox wrote down the name.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Greg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see Kaylee standing barefoot on rice Thursday night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved to Tasha.<\/p>\n<p>That was all the answer I needed.<\/p>\n<p>Tasha touched his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow we discipline our child is private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot when your discipline injures her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe injures herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia suddenly stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every adult turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter was still wearing pajama pants and mismatched socks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee doesn&#39;t lie,\u201d she said. \u201cShe won&#39;t even tell the teacher when kids cut in front of her at lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tasha stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should teach your daughter to stay out of adult matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped beside Mia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should stop dragging children into yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Before he reached us, the door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A woman in a navy coat entered with a county investigator and the school resource officer.<\/p>\n<p>She introduced herself as Dana Ruiz from Child Protective Services.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee would receive a private interview and a medical examination.<\/p>\n<p>Greg protested immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Tasha did not.<\/p>\n<p>She only watched Kaylee.<\/p>\n<p>The expression on her face frightened the child more than Greg&#39;s anger.<\/p>\n<p>As officers guided the couple toward another room, Tasha stopped beside the bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took those from my house,\u201d she said to Kaylee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I answered. \u201cShe wore them into mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tasha looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you brought into your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer moved her along.<\/p>\n<p>Her words stayed behind.<\/p>\n<p>Something about her reaction bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>She had remained composed through accusations of physical abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The shoes were different.<\/p>\n<p>She had watched them.<\/p>\n<p>I crouched beside the bag.<\/p>\n<p>Pink canvas.<\/p>\n<p>Glitter.<\/p>\n<p>Worn rubber.<\/p>\n<p>A small plastic butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw that the removable insert in the left shoe sat slightly higher than the one in the right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Fox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse put on gloves.<\/p>\n<p>She lifted the insert.<\/p>\n<p>Something metallic dropped onto the desk.<\/p>\n<p>A tiny silver key.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee gasped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quiet room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you hide it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Tasha fell asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee looked at Mia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to give somebody my shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee had once told Mia that if she ever gave her the pink sneakers, Mia had to make me look inside them.<\/p>\n<p>The sleepover had never been only a sleepover.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee had been trying to smuggle evidence out.<\/p>\n<p>The key was sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Police were contacted.<\/p>\n<p>From the room next door came Greg&#39;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not searching my house!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Tasha said something.<\/p>\n<p>We could not hear what.<\/p>\n<p>Greg immediately stopped shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later Dana received a call.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecure the residence,\u201d she said. \u201cNeither adult leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hung up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee, does anyone else live in your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Dana crouched again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there another child who uses the quiet room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Tears appeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not supposed to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared toward the room where Tasha waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy little brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Greg had told everyone Kaylee was an only child.<\/p>\n<p>Police raced to the Whitman house.<\/p>\n<p>We waited while radio traffic crackled.<\/p>\n<p>The locked room was found.<\/p>\n<p>It was empty.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe moved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another transmission came.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs had been discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Six children.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee was one of them.<\/p>\n<p>From the adjoining room came Tasha&#39;s first scream.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee grabbed me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose aren&#39;t all her kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed at the
