Her overnight bag was hugged against her chest, both arms wrapped around it as if someone might try to take it. Dust dulled the toes of her pink sneakers, and the lace on the right shoe had been pulled into a knot so tight I could see the fabric puckering beneath it.

“You can leave those beside Mia’s,” I told her.

I pointed toward the little wooden bench by the door where my daughter had already kicked off her sneakers.

Kaylee did not move.

Behind her, through the glass panel beside the front door, Greg Whitman’s car was still sitting at the curb.

Mia had already started down the hallway before realizing her friend was not following. She came bouncing back, talking about the blanket fort she had spent half the afternoon building in the den.

“Come on,” she said. “I saved you the side with the couch cushions.”

Kaylee glanced at her, then at me.

“I want to keep my shoes on.”

Normally, I would have objected. Our carpet was nearly white, a decision I regretted every rainy week, and Mia knew perfectly well that shoes stopped at the door.

But there was something in Kaylee’s face that made the rule suddenly seem unimportant.

She was not testing me.

She was frightened.

Greg lowered his driver’s-side window.

“Everything all right?”

Kaylee’s entire posture changed.

Her shoulders straightened. Her chin came up.

“Yes, Dad.”

The response sounded practiced.

Tasha sat beside Greg in the passenger seat. Greg’s second wife was wearing large sunglasses even though evening shadows were already spreading across the street. She turned toward our doorway.

Kaylee squeezed her overnight bag harder.

“We’re good,” I called.

Greg lifted a hand and pulled away from the curb.

Kaylee watched until the car disappeared.

Only then did she breathe out.

It was quiet and quick, but I heard it.

“All right,” I said, deliberately cheerful. “Special sleepover exemption. She and Mia had become friends in first grade and inseparable by second. I had driven them to birthday parties, supervised disastrous baking experiments, and listened to them debate which animals would make the worst school principals.

Kaylee had always been quieter than Mia.

But quiet was not the same as afraid.

That evening, she carried her overnight bag everywhere.

When the girls watched television, the bag rested against Kaylee’s leg. At dinner, she hooked one strap around the chair. When she went to the bathroom, she carried it down the hallway and left it directly outside the door.

I noticed.

I told myself not to turn ordinary behavior into something sinister.

Then dinner gave me another reason to wonder.

I had ordered pizza. Mia abandoned her crusts as usual, but Kaylee ate every bite of her first slice and immediately finished a second.

She looked at the remaining pieces.

“Can I have another?”

“Of course.”

She hesitated.

“For tonight?”

I frowned.

“Yes.”

“You don’t need it for tomorrow?”

“We have breakfast food.”

Her expression changed for an instant.

Surprise.

Not delight.
