She had signed enough birthday cards and Christmas checks over the years that I knew its shape.<\/p>\n<p>This version was neat.<\/p>\n<p>Compressed.<\/p>\n<p>Careful.<\/p>\n<p>Just like mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not sign this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David leaned against the bookshelf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one said you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is my name here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had the document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the packet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t create every page in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched them.<\/p>\n<p>The strange thing about discovering a second forgery was that it did not reduce my fear.<\/p>\n<p>It increased it.<\/p>\n<p>Because if David had forged both signatures, the deception was broader than I knew.<\/p>\n<p>And if he had not, someone else had access to our home, our documents and enough knowledge of the family to construct believable paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Neither possibility was good.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel remained on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, photograph every page before anyone moves anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the packet on the desk and took photographs carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Front.<\/p>\n<p>Back.<\/p>\n<p>Attachments.<\/p>\n<p>Stamps.<\/p>\n<p>Handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Every detail.<\/p>\n<p>David watched silently.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda said, \u201cSamuel, can you tell if this was ever actually used?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from a photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if it was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could represent attempted misrepresentation, depending on who created it, how it was transmitted and what representations accompanied it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel, don&#39;t turn this into some criminal drama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer\u2019s voice remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t need to turn it into anything, David. Two people say their signatures were fabricated on a financial authorization involving property neither of them agreed to pledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see what he&#39;s doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That shut him up.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel advised me not to remove documents unless there was a risk of destruction. Photographing them and securing copies electronically was enough for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked a question I had not considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have security cameras inside the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExterior cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny covering the office entrance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought.<\/p>\n<p>Our system had been upgraded after a package theft the previous spring.<\/p>\n<p>There was one interior camera.<\/p>\n<p>Not inside the office.<\/p>\n<p>In the main hallway facing the front door.<\/p>\n<p>The office entrance sat partially within its field of view.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the security app.<\/p>\n<p>David immediately said, \u201cThose recordings only go back thirty days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>The system had cloud archives because I had upgraded the plan while traveling back and forth to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Six months.<\/p>\n<p>David saw the dates.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>Quick.<\/p>\n<p>But I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>I always noticed now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you looking at camera footage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause documents did not walk into this room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen would the paper have been created?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I checked the handwritten authorization.<\/p>\n<p>The date was five months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks before my mother entered hospice.<\/p>\n<p>I searched that week.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the footage was boring.<\/p>\n<p>Delivery drivers.<\/p>\n<p>David leaving for work.<\/p>\n<p>Me returning from Chicago twice.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda visiting one afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>A repair technician.<\/p>\n<p>Housecleaning staff.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jason.<\/p>\n<p>He came to the house on a Tuesday at 2:17 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>I had been in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>David was at work.<\/p>\n<p>At least, according to what he told me at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Jason used the keypad code.<\/p>\n<p>He let himself in.<\/p>\n<p>He carried a black backpack.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was he here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I fast-forwarded.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two minutes later, Jason emerged from the hallway where the office was located.<\/p>\n<p>He still carried the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>Then he went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Our bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>The room where I kept my passport, spare bank cards and personal documents.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him disappear out of camera range.<\/p>\n<p>He came downstairs eleven minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>He left the house.<\/p>\n<p>Total visit: thirty-six minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda whispered, \u201cCall him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David said immediately, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We both turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you&#39;re turning ordinary things into evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason entering my house while I was gone is ordinary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had the code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat answers how. Not why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have needed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Jason.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on the fourth ring.<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded strained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you in my house five months ago while I was in Chicago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid asked me to pick something up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>David muttered, \u201cUnbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut me on speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the forged document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething with my signature and your mother&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then, quietly, \u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That single syllable chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know a document existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho made it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy were you in the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid needed a copy of your identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda made a sound somewhere between a gasp and a sob.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me there was a file in the bedroom desk. Passport copies, licenses, things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice sounded distant to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you take my license?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI photographed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said the financing people needed identity confirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t forge it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give someone a sample?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason swallowed audibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda sat down on the office chair.<\/p>\n<p>David snapped, \u201cJason, you are lying to save yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I&#39;m finally telling her because you&#39;re setting me up to take everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the phone tighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sample?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn old tax form.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>It made terrible sense.<\/p>\n<p>Tax documents contained signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Identification numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Enough material to imitate consent convincingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho asked you to get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said it plainly.<\/p>\n<p>No hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>David shouted, \u201cThat&#39;s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason shouted back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it isn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped away from both voices.<\/p>\n<p>The hallway camera footage remained paused on Jason entering my home.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had been dying.<\/p>\n<p>I had been in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>And my husband had sent his brother into our bedroom for identification documents so they could construct financing paperwork around assets that belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWho created the forged form?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw anyone make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gave it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David lunged toward the phone again.<\/p>\n<p>I moved behind the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda stood between us.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>She simply stepped into the space.<\/p>\n<p>Her back faced me.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at her son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stopped.<\/p>\n<p>That one word from his mother carried years of family hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen Brenda use it against him.<\/p>\n<p>Jason continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe document already had Sarah\u2019s signature when David showed it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Brenda&#39;s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember seeing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not forge Mom\u2019s name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you saw Sarah\u2019s forged signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned away.<\/p>\n<p>That was the closest thing to an admission we needed.<\/p>\n<p>I felt aware.<\/p>\n<p>Those three words were suddenly more sinister.<\/p>\n<p>Not a direct lie about signing.<\/p>\n<p>A carefully engineered implication.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel asked Jason to preserve everything.<\/p>\n<p>Messages.<\/p>\n<p>Emails.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemails.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud backups.<\/p>\n<p>Even deleted files if they could be restored.<\/p>\n<p>Jason agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThere is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>That phrase had become terrifying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe documents weren&#39;t really about the what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lender wanted proof David had access to family assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat family assets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>David said, \u201cHang up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Jason answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The office seemed to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did a lender know anything about my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid told them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda whispered, \u201cBefore she died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Jason kept going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said your mother had a major estate and you were the primary beneficiary. The lender wanted evidence that there would eventually be enough wealth available to settle the exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were selling them my inheritance before I had inherited it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told them it would cover the debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said there were future resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my dying mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He slammed one hand against the shelf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to keep everything from collapsing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The framed wedding photograph shook.<\/p>\n<p>The sound echoed through the office.<\/p>\n<p>I did not flinch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything already collapsed, David.
