Richard&#39;s office.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;When?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Maybe three weeks ago.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What did they discuss?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I wasn&#39;t in the room.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You just said you met him.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I came in at the end.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What did you hear?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Harrison looked toward Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared back with such hatred that I almost didn&#39;t recognize him.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison whispered, &quot;He said Robert&#39;s signature would pass normal review.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Ross cursed under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Morales closed her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mr. Ellison.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Richard gave a humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Which one?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Richard.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You&#39;re coming with us.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Am I under arrest?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;At this moment, we have sufficient cause to detain you for questioning regarding suspected fraud and conspiracy.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;My lawyer\u2014&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You should call one.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at Calvin Ross.<\/p>\n<p>Ross shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Robert entered the room, Richard seemed truly afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Not angry.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Powell stepped beside him.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Hands where I can see them.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mom.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>That word almost broke me.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I wanted to save him.<\/p>\n<p>Because I remembered every other time it had meant something different.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, look.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, wait.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, don&#39;t leave yet.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, can you help?<\/p>\n<p>Now it meant protect me from what I chose.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my hands on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You know me.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That is the problem.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Powell guided him toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>As he passed Robert, he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This is what you wanted.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked up.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Don&#39;t lie.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If I wanted this, I would have stopped paying your debts fifteen years ago.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s face twisted.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You think you&#39;re righteous because you finally said no.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s answer came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No. I think I&#39;m late.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The detectives took Richard out.<\/p>\n<p>The door closed.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harrison sank into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>He covered his face with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mom.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He was crying now.<\/p>\n<p>Real tears.<\/p>\n<p>They did not restore trust.<\/p>\n<p>They did not erase the recordings.<\/p>\n<p>But they were real.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;m sorry.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from him.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You will tell them everything.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>His hands dropped.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Every conversation. Every account. Every lie.
