Four months since I had watched Robert's car disappear at the end of the street. Four months since I had learned that a quiet house could feel frightening before it began to feel peaceful.

His message was short.

Can I come see you?

I read it several times.

There was nothing demanding in the words. No guilt. No explanation. No accusation. Just a question.

I put my phone facedown on the counter and finished washing the plate in my hands.

Five minutes later, I picked up the phone again.

Yes. For coffee.

His reply came almost immediately.

Thank you.

I stared at the word.

It was such a small thing.

But Derek had rarely thanked me for anything during those last years. He had expected food, money, rides, favors, patience, forgiveness. Gratitude had slowly disappeared from our relationship until I had almost forgotten what it sounded like.

On Saturday morning, I cleaned the kitchen even though it was already clean.

I wiped the table.

I checked the coffee maker.

I opened the refrigerator and closed it again.

Then I laughed at myself.

I was preparing for my son the way someone prepares for a storm.

At eleven, a car stopped outside.

I looked through the window.

Derek stepped out.

He looked thinner.

His hair was shorter, and the restless energy I had grown accustomed to seeing in him was less obvious. He stood beside the car for several seconds before approaching the porch.

When he knocked, I did not move immediately.

I took one breath.

Then another.

I opened the door.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi.”

He looked at me.

His eyes moved briefly to the faint mark that had long since disappeared from my cheek.

Then he looked away.

“I brought something.”

He held out a small paper bag.

“What is it?”

“Coffee.”

I almost smiled.

“You brought coffee to my house?”

“I didn't know what else to bring.”

“You could have come empty-handed.”

“I know.”

He paused.

“But I wanted to bring something.”

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

He crossed the threshold carefully.

That detail stayed with me.

Derek had spent years entering this house as though it belonged to him.

That morning, he waited for permission.

We sat at the kitchen table.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

He looked around.

“You changed the wall.”

“Yes.”

“And the chair.”

“Yes.”

“It looks good.”

“Thank you.”

He folded his hands.

“How are you?”

“Better.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

I poured coffee into both cups.

He didn't touch his.

“I've been going to therapy twice a week.”

“I know.”

“Dad told you?”

“Yes.”

“I didn't ask him to tell you.”

“I didn't mind.”

He nodded.

Then he looked down.

“I still get angry.”

“I assumed you did.”

“I thought the anger would disappear.”

“It probably won't.”

His eyebrows lifted.

I continued.

“You may have to learn what to do with it.”

He nodded slowly.

“That is what they're teaching me.”

For the first time since he arrived, I could see the person I remembered beneath the guarded expression.

Not the little boy.

Not the angry man.

Just Derek.

My son.

“I've been thinking about that morning,” he said.

“So have I.”

“I remember everything.”

I looked at him.

“Good.”

He winced.

“I deserve that.”

“I didn't mean it that way.”

“I know.”

He finally lifted his coffee.

“I remember you flinching.”

I looked down.

“That was the part that scared me.”

“You weren't scared before?”

“I was.”

He swallowed.

“But you hiding it was worse.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I didn't understand how bad it had gotten until I saw your face when I stood up.”

I said nothing.

“I thought I was angry at everyone.”

He stared into his coffee.

“But really, I was angry at myself.”

“That may be true.”

“I blamed Dad.”

“I know.”

“I blamed my divorce.”

“I know.”

“I blamed my job.”

“I know.”

“I blamed you.”

He looked up.

“And none of those things made me hit you.”

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“I hate that I did it.”

I held his gaze.

“You should.”

He nodded.

There was no argument.

That mattered.

After a moment, he asked, “Do you forgive me?”

I didn't answer immediately.

“I don't know.”

His face tightened.

“I understand.”

“Forgiveness isn't the first thing I need.”

“What is?”

“Trust.”

He nodded.

“How do I earn that?”

“By doing what you say you'll do when nobody is watching.”

He looked toward the window.

“I can do that.”

“You have to.”

“I know.”

We talked for another hour.

He told me about his job at the mechanic shop.

He told me one of his coworkers had started teasing him because he always left exactly on time for therapy.

He told me he was saving money.

He told me he had stopped drinking.

That last statement made me look at him.

“You were drinking more than you told me.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Too much.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I knew you'd worry.”

I almost laughed.

“Derek, worrying was what I did best.”

He smiled for the first time.

“I know.”

It was a small smile.

It didn't erase anything.

But I welcomed it.

Before he left, he stood near the door.

“Can I come again?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Next Saturday.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

Then he hesitated.

“Can I hug you?”

My chest tightened.

I hadn't expected the question.

“Yes.”

He stepped forward slowly.

His arms went around me.

For one second, my body remained tense.

Then I relaxed.

He pulled away first.

“Thank you.”

I nodded.

He opened the door.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“I won't ask to move back.”

I looked at him.

“Thank you.”

“I don't want to ruin what you've built.”

Those words stayed with me after he left.

I watched his car disappear.

Then I went inside.

The house was quiet again.

But this time, I wasn't afraid that welcoming my son into my life would mean surrendering my boundaries.

I had finally learned that the two things could exist together.

Love could have a door.

And that door could have a lock.

—
