{"id":14701,"date":"2026-09-20T12:15:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-20T12:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=14701"},"modified":"2026-09-20T12:15:31","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T12:15:31","slug":"part-2-at-the-breakfast-table-my-son-tried-to-shrink-one-violent-moment-until-the-truth-became-impossible-to-ignore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=14701","title":{"rendered":"PART 2 \u2013 At the Breakfast Table, My Son Tried to Shrink One Violent Moment Until the Truth Became Impossible to Ignore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Derek remained on the stairs long enough for the coffee in my cup to cool.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved from Robert to the folder and then back to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome sit down,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>Robert repeated himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was something in Robert&#39;s voice that made Derek obey.<\/p>\n<p>He came down the remaining steps and pulled out a chair opposite me.<\/p>\n<p>He sat carefully.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, no one touched the food.<\/p>\n<p>The smell of fried chorizo hung in the warm kitchen, absurdly pleasant against the tension filling the room.<\/p>\n<p>Derek leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you called Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze flicked toward my cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn&#39;t that serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the old instinct rise inside me\u2014the instinct to calm everyone down, soften my words, keep the conversation from becoming another fight.<\/p>\n<p>For years, I had used that instinct like a shield.<\/p>\n<p>This time I set it aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was serious to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, come on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I am not going to help you make this smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His fingers tapped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept pushing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked you a question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wouldn&#39;t let it go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked when you planned to repay the money you borrowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That was how the argument had begun.<\/p>\n<p>Two days earlier, I had reminded him that the money he borrowed for his car insurance was overdue. Derek had told me he was waiting for a payment. I had asked whether he could at least give me a date.<\/p>\n<p>He accused me of treating him like a failure.<\/p>\n<p>I told him that asking for my own money back wasn&#39;t an insult.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation had continued until voices rose.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the glass.<\/p>\n<p>Then the shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Then the hand against my face.<\/p>\n<p>Derek rubbed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I was stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing stressed doesn&#39;t give you permission to hit someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you going to lecture me too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek seemed surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI brought you choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat choices?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert placed several papers on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Derek glanced at them without touching them.<\/p>\n<p>I watched his face change as he recognized the first document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour apartment lease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one in Denver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou rented an apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert kept his voice even.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to get out of this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou agree with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked him to help me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed to hit harder than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek pushed his chair back slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo now you&#39;re throwing me out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am asking you to leave because I don&#39;t feel safe with you here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I was sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said it wasn&#39;t serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I could almost see the argument forming in his head.<\/p>\n<p>He had always been good at finding the weakest point in a conversation and pressing there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what your problem is, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always make everything about yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>I raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet him finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think because you raised me, you can control me forever. You don&#39;t understand what it&#39;s like for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may not understand everything you&#39;re going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I understand what happened last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this wasn&#39;t only last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>I began listing the things I had spent months pretending weren&#39;t connected.<\/p>\n<p>The yelling.<\/p>\n<p>The insults.<\/p>\n<p>The money he demanded.<\/p>\n<p>The threats he made when I refused.<\/p>\n<p>The wall he kicked.<\/p>\n<p>The glass he threw.<\/p>\n<p>The way he stood too close when he was angry.<\/p>\n<p>The way I had learned to lower my voice because I knew his would rise.<\/p>\n<p>The way I stopped inviting friends over because I never knew what mood he would be in.<\/p>\n<p>The way I sometimes waited until he left the house before going to the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>Derek shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re exaggerating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe always does this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Derek laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course. You two finally have something in common.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have seen this sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were hurting your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hung between them.<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked down at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then he whispered, \u201cYou weren&#39;t here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I wasn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou left us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert took a slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left the marriage. I didn&#39;t stop being your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek&#39;s fingers curled around the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t around when everything fell apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer seemed to confuse him.<\/p>\n<p>Robert continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made mistakes. I was absent in ways I shouldn&#39;t have been. But none of that gives you the right to hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were wet, but his voice remained hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is what you wanted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad to come back and tell me I&#39;m the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted someone here who wouldn&#39;t let me change my mind because I&#39;m your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced him.<\/p>\n<p>I had never said it before.<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>The morning light had strengthened. The street was beginning to wake. A delivery truck rolled past. Somewhere outside, a dog barked twice and stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Robert pushed another paper toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is information from a treatment center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek didn&#39;t touch it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreatment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnger management isn&#39;t enough,\u201d Robert said. \u201cThey have a program that deals with impulse control, substance use if necessary, and behavioral therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t need rehab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen call it something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you hit me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>His silence answered more honestly than he could.<\/p>\n<p>He finally said, \u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why you need help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek stood suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>The chair legs scraped the floor.<\/p>\n<p>My entire body reacted before my mind could stop it.<\/p>\n<p>I flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Derek saw.<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>Robert saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny movement\u2014the involuntary retreat of my shoulders\u2014said more than any accusation could have.<\/p>\n<p>Derek slowly lowered himself back into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re afraid of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not completely.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough.<\/p>\n<p>But something cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t mean for you to be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would never\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since he had come downstairs, he looked young.<\/p>\n<p>Not innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Just young.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the little boy who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>The teenager who once waited outside my office because he wanted to show me a drawing.<\/p>\n<p>The young man who hugged me after his first real job interview.<\/p>\n<p>Those memories were still mine.<\/p>\n<p>But they could no longer erase what stood in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>Derek lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you felt like this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered honestly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong enough that I don&#39;t remember when it started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>Robert quietly gathered the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have two options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first is Denver. You leave with me today. You start treatment. I help you get settled. You don&#39;t come back here until your mother decides it is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the second?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached into the folder and removed the final document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second is that I report everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek stared at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>His face lost its color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already called the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformation from a women&#39;s justice organization. I&#39;ve documented what happened. I took photographs. I wrote down dates.
