twenty-three minutes.

I know because Daniel watched the clock.

He sat motionless at the table, his coffee untouched.

Every few minutes he looked toward the door.

The old Daniel would have knocked.

He would have demanded reassurance.

He would have said he felt terrible until Teresa came out to make him feel better.

This time he waited.

When the bathroom door finally opened, Teresa walked past us toward the bedroom.

Daniel stood.

“Mom.”

She stopped.

He into the living room, close enough to hear if things went wrong, far enough to let them speak.

Daniel continued.

“The first time, I really was upset.”

Teresa looked at him.

“When Dad was pushing me about work, I felt like everybody thought I was useless.”

I almost interrupted.

I didn’t.

“I said things because I wanted you to understand how bad I felt.”

Teresa’s voice was quiet.

“You said you would die.”

“I know.”

“You told me “I wasn’t planning anything.”

She nodded once.

“The second time?”

“No.”

“The third?”

“No.”

She began crying.

Daniel’s voice became almost inaudible.

“After that, I knew it worked.”

The words were worse spoken aloud than they had been on the screen.

Teresa gripped the back of a chair.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You heard me excuse after that.

No misunderstanding.

No addiction to soften it.

No bad childhood.

No cruel father.

Just a son telling his mother that he had knowingly used her worst fear because it got him what he wanted.

Teresa sat.

Daniel remained standing.

“I am sorry.”

She wiped her face.

“I believe you feel sorry.”

His eyes lifted.

“That isn’t the same as trusting you.”

He flinched.

She continued.

“I love you.”

He nodded.

“But I am afraid of you.”

Daniel looked like she had struck him.

Teresa pressed on.

“I don’t mean I think you will hit me.”

He sat slowly.

“I am afraid you will become helpless again the moment I stop protecting you.”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“I am afraid you will threaten me if I say no.”

She breathed in shakily.

“And I am afraid of myself.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“I don’t trust myself not to give in.”

That surprised him.

It surprised me too.

Teresa folded her hands.

“So forgiveness is not enough.”

Daniel swallowed.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Keep doing what you’re doing.”

“For how long?”

She looked at him.

“As long as it takes.”

He laughed weakly.

“That could be forever.”

“Maybe.”

He nodded.

It was not a happy conversation.

That was why I believed it mattered.

After Daniel left for work, Teresa sat beside me on the couch.

“I wanted to hug him.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I knew if I did, he would think everything was fixed.”

“Maybe.”

She looked at me.

“Was I cruel?”

“No.”

“You don’t know that.”

She was right.

I had begun to understand that the certainty I used to carry was its own kind of danger.

“No,” I said again, differently. “I don’t know.”

She leaned against me.

“But you were honest.”

That evening, the psychologist met with all three of us.

Daniel sat with his arms crossed.

Teresa held a notebook.

I felt ridiculous.

Family therapy sounded like something other people did.

People in television dramas.

People who had failed to manage their own homes.

Then I realized that thought was exactly why we had waited so long.

The therapist asked us to describe what happened without interrupting one another.

Teresa went first.

She talked about fear.

I spoke about anger.

Daniel spoke about shame.

Each of us believed our emotion had been caused by the other two.

That was the pattern.

I got angry because Teresa protected Daniel.

Teresa protected Daniel because my anger frightened her.

Daniel avoided responsibility because our conflict made him feel defective.

Then he manipulated Teresa because manipulation worked.

Then I got angrier.

Round and round.

Understanding the cycle did not absolve anyone.

It simply showed us why yelling had never broken it.

The therapist asked Daniel something I had not thought to ask.

“What did the money buy?”

Daniel shrugged.

“Stuff.”

“What stuff?”

“Food. Mostly gambling debt.”

I felt something cold move through me.

Daniel had not only manipulated Teresa for comfort.

He had been feeding something.

A compulsion.

A system that promised recovery after every loss.

The therapist remained calm.

“How long?”

“Almost a year.”

“Does Mau gamble too?”

Daniel nodded.

That explained the messages.

Not all of them.

But enough.

The therapist asked whether Daniel had gambled since returning home.

He hesitated.

Too long.

“Yes.”

Teresa stood.

“When?”

“Last week.”

“With what money?”

“Twenty dollars.”

“From where?”

“My paycheck.”

I watched her face.

Twenty dollars was nothing compared with sixty thousand.

That was not the point.

“You told us you were done,” she said.

“I said I was trying.”

“No. You said you stopped.”

Daniel looked at me.

I did not help him.

The therapist asked him why he had done it.

He laughed bitterly.

“I thought I could prove I could control it.”

“That experiment gave you information,” she said.

He frowned.

“What information?”

“That you may not be able to control it the way you think.”

Daniel looked away.

The therapist began discussing addiction treatment.

Financial blocks.

Self-exclusion from betting platforms.

Accountability systems.

No access to family money.

No gambling apps.

Separate bank monitoring while he rebuilt trust.

Daniel resisted every suggestion.

Not loudly.

But enough.

“This is too much.”

The therapist asked, “Compared with what?”

He stared at her.

She pointed toward Teresa.

“Compared with sixty thousand dollars of debt?”

Daniel said nothing.

On the way home, nobody spoke.

At a red light, Daniel said, “I’m not giving you access to my bank account.”

I kept my eyes on the road.

“Then don’t.”

He looked surprised.

“You’re not going to force me?”

“No.”

“Seriously?”

“You are an adult.”

He waited.

“But if you want to keep living with us, we will need a system that protects the household from gambling.”

“There it is.”

“You choose.”

“What if I move out?”

“That is also a choice.”

Teresa stared out the window.

When we reached home, Daniel went straight to his room.

An hour later, he came out holding his phone.

“I deleted the apps.”

I looked at him.

“That’s a start.”

“I blocked the sites.”

“Good.”

He put a piece of paper on the table.

It listed the gambling accounts he remembered.

He had also written down approximate losses.

The total was sickening.

Teresa read the number.

Then read it again.

Daniel sat across from her.

“I think I have a problem.”

It was the first time he had said it.

Not because we accused him.

Not because a therapist used the word.

Because he finally could not make the numbers mean anything else.

Teresa looked at him for a long time.

Then she reached across the table.

Daniel took her hand.

She did not say everything was going to be okay.

She did not promise to save him.

She did not tell him he was forgiven.

She simply held his hand.

And after a moment, Daniel started crying.

Not the performed crying from the recordings.

No demand followed it.

No transfer request.

No threat.

He lowered his head and cried because the sixty thousand dollars were real, his mother’s fear was real, his father’s anger was real, and the thing he had called bad luck had a name.

I sat beside them.

For the first time since I had packed his clothes into black trash bags, none of us tried to escape what was happening.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated on the table.

A message appeared from Mau.

Daniel looked at it.

Teresa did too.

Mau had sent a screenshot.

A betting account.

A large balance.

And one line beneath it:

“You want one last chance to win it all back?”

Daniel stared at the
