An app-based loan. Money from her sister. Money from a woman at the market named Mrs. Lupita. Smaller amounts from places I had never heard about.<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the back of the chair.<\/p>\n<p>The wood creaked beneath my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou borrowed from people without telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to repay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to shout.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I looked again at Daniel\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>There were pictures of my wallet.<\/p>\n<p>My bank card.<\/p>\n<p>Receipts.<\/p>\n<p>My own belongings photographed inside my own home.<\/p>\n<p>I found another exchange with Mau.<\/p>\n<p>Mau had asked whether I suspected anything.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s answer was contemptuous. According to him, I noticed nothing because Teresa covered for him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he explained how he kept her silent.<\/p>\n<p>If she told me the truth, he would leave forever.<\/p>\n<p>He knew she was terrified of losing him.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the phone away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teresa looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you let this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I could stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept giving him money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first it wasn\u2019t like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what was it like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time was after you told him he needed to find work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the argument.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had stayed in his room for most of the following day. Teresa had told me I had humiliated him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent me a recording,\u201d she continued. \u201cHe was crying. He said he was worthless. He said you hated him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me that if I didn\u2019t help him, he might throw himself in front of a train.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you paid him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Teresa. Tell me exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. I gave him money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once Daniel learned that the threat worked, she said, something changed.<\/p>\n<p>The tears became demands.<\/p>\n<p>The requests became deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>If Teresa resisted, Daniel accused her of ruining his life. If she mentioned telling me, he threatened to disappear. Sometimes he said she would have to live knowing his death was her fault.<\/p>\n<p>I reopened the messages and searched until I found one of the recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice filled the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Weak. Trembling.<\/p>\n<p>He told his mother that if she refused to help him, he might not survive the night.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa covered her ears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost did.<\/p>\n<p>Then the recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>A few messages later, Daniel had written to ask whether she had transferred the money yet.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped the audio.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from my wife.<\/p>\n<p>The rage I had carried home was gone.<\/p>\n<p>What replaced it was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Sadness had weight. I could feel it pressing down through my shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Teresa whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t only you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hid it. That was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I spent years thinking I could shout responsibility into him. Every time you protected him, I got angrier. Every time I got angrier, you protected him more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teresa stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe built this together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lips trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s still responsible for what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we taught him where the weak places were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the living room.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s plate was still on the table. The soda remained beside it, untouched.<\/p>\n<p>The whole evening had started because a grown man considered getting his own ice an unreasonable burden.<\/p>\n<p>Now sixty thousand dollars of hidden debt sat invisibly beside that glass.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Another message from Mau appeared.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to know whether Daniel had been thrown out yet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he told Daniel he could stay at his apartment\u2014but only if he brought money.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Teresa.<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere will Daniel sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if he has nowhere safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we help him find safe shelter. We don\u2019t hand him money and pretend nothing happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if he hurts himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence that had controlled our house without my knowing it.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>For months Daniel had not needed locks, fists, or chains.<\/p>\n<p>He had found something stronger.<\/p>\n<p>His mother\u2019s terror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he threatens suicide,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cwe call emergency services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teresa looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take it seriously. Every time. But we stop paying him to make the threat disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if that makes him angrier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if he hates me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have spent too much time asking whether Daniel will hate us and not enough asking what our fear is turning him into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teresa broke.<\/p>\n<p>I went around the table and held her.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time neither of us said anything.<\/p>\n<p>The house felt enormous without Daniel in it.<\/p>\n<p>His half-eaten dinner remained on the table.<\/p>\n<p>The soda grew warmer.<\/p>\n<p>His phone lay between us with its terrible little archive of everything we had refused to see.<\/p>\n<p>At one in the morning, my own phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice came through immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s my phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then the softness disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t start this again, old man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked across the kitchen at Teresa.<\/p>\n<p>She had heard him.<\/p>\n<p>I put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel didn\u2019t know yet that his mother and I had read everything.<\/p>\n<p>He also didn\u2019t know that the rules inside our house had just changed.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=14622\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: When Daniel Called From the Street, His Mother Finally Answered the Threat That Had Controlled Her for Months<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I carried Daniel\u2019s phone into the kitchen without touching anything else on the screen.
