flashed toward me.<\/p>\n<p>She had expected me to be frightened by confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, someone in uniform was calmly confirming that the house still belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>The her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also requested a laptop,\u201d he said. \u201cI told her nonessential property needs to wait for the scheduled retrieval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe glared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat computer belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be retrieved later,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are enjoying this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve wanted me gone for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would have been simpler than what I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to trust you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy returned to his cruiser.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stood beside her SUV while Mitchell remained between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n<p>He now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She climbed into the SUV and started it.<\/p>\n<p>Before reversing, she looked at me through the open window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Sarah Jenkins can make this disappear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fact that she knew Sarah\u2019s name froze me.<\/p>\n<p>I had never told her.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know Mom\u2019s lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe realized too late what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked forward.<\/p>\n<p>Then she drove away.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the driveway watching the SUV disappear around the
