coming back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question no longer sounded like demand.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the full year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could come home early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could also stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six months earlier, I would have answered based on everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>What Maya needed.<\/p>\n<p>What Austin expected.<\/p>\n<p>What Ernest would have wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Now I considered myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night, I stood at the rail beneath a sky full of stars.<\/p>\n<p>The ship moved steadily forward.<\/p>\n<p>Half the voyage remained.<\/p>\n<p>Half a year.<\/p>\n<p>For once, there was no emergency pulling me backward.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Iris.<\/p>\n<p>Call me when convenient. Not urgent.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled at those last two words.<\/p>\n<p>Not urgent.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most beautiful phrase I had learned all year.<\/p>\n<p>I called anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prosecutor\u2019s office contacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Calvin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are preparing charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took a slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFraud-related counts.
