simply because action made me feel less helpless.

Michael sent someone to the library.

Thomas contacted local authorities.

Sarah stayed on the phone with Ella.

I stood beside her, listening.

Ella sounded frightened.

But she didn't cry.

That somehow made it worse.

“Are you okay?” Sarah me.

“Yes.”

Ella was quiet.

Then she said, “Tell him I don't blame him.”

My throat tightened.

I took the phone.

“I'm here.”

“I know.”

“I should have been there.”

“Yes.”

“I can't change that.”

“No.”

“But I'm going to do what I can now.”

Ella was silent.

Then she said, “That's all I wanted.”

The call ended.

I sat down.

Sarah looked at me.

“You heard her.”

“Yes.”

“She doesn't need you to become perfect.”

“I know.”

“She needs you to keep showing up.”

I nodded.

The words were simple.

But they felt heavier than anything I had heard in years.

An hour later, we received confirmation.

Ella was safe.

The person following her had left when police arrived.

No arrest.

No identification.

But she was safe.

For the moment.

Then Thomas arrived with new information.

“Edward is gone.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“His office is empty.”

“His house?”

“Empty.”

“Martin?”

“Missing.”

The room fell silent.

“They knew,” Michael said.

“Knew what?”

“That the evidence was moving.”

I looked at the ledger.

“Where is the original?”

“Secure.”

“And the copies?”

“Distributed.”

Thomas nodded.

“That means they can't destroy everything.”

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I felt something else.

A question.

“Why did they threaten Ella if they knew the evidence was already copied?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because they still need something.”

“What?”

“The final page.”

I opened the ledger.

We had photographed nearly everything.

But one page had been damaged.

The bottom corner had been torn away.

I remembered it.

My father's final entries.

The names.

The witness list.

The note about protecting the children.

The missing portion could contain the identity of whoever had ordered the relocations.

“Where is the missing piece?”

Michael looked at me.

“We don't know.”

Sarah's face changed.

Then she stood.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

She walked toward the kitchen.

She opened a cabinet.

Then another.

Finally, she removed a small metal box.

“I found this months ago.”

I stared.

“What's inside?”

“I didn't know.”

She opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My father's.

I unfolded it.

There was only one paragraph.

The names of the people responsible had been recorded elsewhere because the ledger itself could be seized.

Then came a location.

An abandoned property.

One I recognized.

My father had owned it briefly.

A house outside Charleston.

I looked at Michael.

“We have to go there.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not without protection.”

“I know.”

The police would accompany us.

We would retrieve whatever remained.

Then everything would be handed over.

No more secrets.

No private deals.

No hiding.

Before we left, Sarah stopped me.

“David.”

“Yes?”

“If this ends badly…”

I waited.

“Don't make this about proving something to me.”

“I won't.”

“Promise?”

I shook my head.

“I don't want to make promises anymore.”

She looked surprised.

Then smiled faintly.

“Good.”

I understood what she meant.

Promises had become words I used when I wanted someone to trust me without giving them evidence.

Now I needed actions.

We drove toward the old property.

The sky had darkened.

Storm clouds gathered over the trees.

The abandoned house stood beyond a rusted gate.

We stopped outside.

Police officers moved ahead.

Michael stayed near us.

Sarah held my hand.

Not romantically.

Not as husband and wife.

Simply because neither of us wanted to walk into that place alone.

We entered through the broken front door.

Dust covered everything.

The house smelled of damp wood.

A narrow hallway led toward the back.

My father's old study was still there.

The desk remained.

The shelves were empty.

Michael searched the drawers.

Nothing.

Then Sarah noticed a loose floorboard.

She knelt.

I helped her lift it.

Beneath it was a metal case.

My father's final hiding place.

We opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

A cassette tape.

And one handwritten letter.

I picked up the letter.

The first line made my heart stop.

David, if you are reading this, then they failed to keep you from knowing the truth.

I continued.

My father wrote that the ledger wasn't merely evidence of financial crimes.

It was proof that several families had been controlled for generations.

People were threatened with the safety of their children.

Witnesses were relocated.

Records were altered.

And one person had coordinated everything.

I reached the final line.

The name was there.

Edward Mercer.

But beneath it was another sentence.

Edward did not act alone.

I looked at Sarah.

She was reading over my shoulder.

Then her face went completely still.

“What?”

She pointed to the signature beneath the note.

I recognized it immediately.

It belonged to someone we trusted.

Someone who had helped us for days.

Someone who had known where every copy of the evidence had gone.

Michael saw the name.

His expression changed.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He stared at the signature.

Then he
