name.”

I swallowed.

“Does she hate me?”

Sarah looked away.

“I don't know.”

The answer hurt.

“I need to meet her.”

“You can't simply appear in her life.”

“She's my daughter.”

“You've only just learned that.”

The sentence stopped me.

Sarah wasn't trying to punish me.

She was protecting someone.

Someone I had already failed without even knowing she existed.

“What am I supposed to do?”

“Tell the truth.”

I laughed weakly.

“That's what everyone keeps saying.”

“Because you've spent your whole tonight.”

“What?”

“She contacted Rachel recently.”

My heart jumped.

“Ella?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“She wants to know who her father is.”

I closed my eyes.

I couldn't decide whether I was terrified or grateful.

Maybe both.

“Does Rachel want me to meet her?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why give you the photograph?”

“Because she wanted me to decide whether you were ready.”

“Ready?”

“To become responsible for something that isn't about your comfort.”

I looked at Sarah.

“What do you mean?”

“If you meet Ella, you don't get to disappear when things become difficult.”

“I won't.”

“You don't get to promise that tonight.”

I nodded.

She was right.

Promises had become cheap in our marriage.

I had made too many.

“I'll prove it.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Don't prove it to me.”

She placed the photograph in my hand.

“Prove it to her.”

I looked down.

Ella's face stared back at me.

A child I had never held.

A birthday I had never attended.

A school event I had never watched.

A scraped knee I had never bandaged.

Years of ordinary moments had happened without me.

And I had been alive for every one of them.

I suddenly understood that betrayal wasn't only about affairs.

Sometimes it was about absence.

Sometimes it was about the lives you failed to show up for.

Sarah stood.

“I'll sleep upstairs.”

“Sarah.”

She stopped.

“Are we finished?”

She looked back.

“I don't know.”

“Do you still love me?”

Her eyes softened.

“That isn't the question.”

“What is?”

“Can you become someone I can trust?”

I didn't answer.

Not because I didn't want to.

Because I finally understood that wanting it wasn't enough.

After she went upstairs, I remained alone in the kitchen.

The folder was still open.

The photographs were scattered across the counter.

My old life sat beside my current one.

Affairs.

Hotels.

Receipts.

Rachel.

Michael.

Ella.

Sarah.

Our children.

Everything I had kept separate was finally sitting in one place.

I picked up the photograph of Ella again.

There was a handwritten sentence on the back.

I hadn't noticed it before.

I turned it toward the light.

The handwriting belonged to Rachel.

She had written:

She deserves the truth, but not another lie.

I sat there until dawn.

When the sky began to lighten, I packed a small bag.

I didn't leave a note for Sarah.

There was nothing I could write that would fix what I had done.

Instead, I went upstairs.

I stood outside the bedroom.

Sarah was awake.

“You're leaving?”

“For now.”

“Where?”

“To see Rachel.”

She sat up.

“And then?”

“I don't know.”

That was the first answer I had given her in years that contained no performance.

Sarah nodded.

“Drive carefully.”

I almost smiled.

“Thank you.”

She looked at me.

“David.”

“Yes?”

“If Rachel tells you that Ella is yours, don't make the mistake of thinking biology gives you the right to her life.”

“I understand.”

“I hope you do.”

I left.

The drive toward the address Michael had given me was quiet.

The farther I got from Charleston, the more the city disappeared behind me.

Trees replaced buildings.

The road narrowed.

My phone remained silent.

Then, halfway there, it rang.

I pulled onto the shoulder.

The number was unfamiliar.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A young woman's voice came through.

“Is this David?”

I couldn't speak.

She continued.

“My name is Ella.”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“How did you get this number?”

There was a pause.

“I think you know.”

My throat tightened.

“Ella…”

“I've been trying to find you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I've been looking for you too.”

It was a lie.

A reflex.

The old David trying to survive.

She was silent.

Then she said quietly:

“No, you haven't.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

For years, I had believed the hardest thing I would ever face was losing Sarah.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was realizing how many people had already lost me.

And I had done it while telling myself I was still a good man.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Ella’s Call Followed Me to Rachel’s Door, Where the Woman I Abandoned
