Somewhere upstairs, one of the children shifted in bed, and the ceiling gave a faint creak.<\/p>\n<p>I rubbed my palms against my jeans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been working late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s expression barely changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what you told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t married to you then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the person I was with that night\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer name was Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had never heard that name from me.<\/p>\n<p>I could tell by the slight movement of her eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was Rachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone I knew through work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn affair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the dark window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the night everything went wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the old apartment more clearly now.<\/p>\n<p>The narrow staircase.<\/p>\n<p>The broken lamp beside the sofa.<\/p>\n<p>The cheap coffee maker that leaked onto the counter.<\/p>\n<p>The window that never closed properly.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Rachel sitting at my kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered her crying.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered telling her she was overreacting.<\/p>\n<p>And I remembered the phone call.<\/p>\n<p>That was the part I had buried.<\/p>\n<p>My phone had rung shortly after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>I had looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>One name.<\/p>\n<p>A person from my old circle.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knew Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knew me.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t answered.<\/p>\n<p>The phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>I still didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel stood up.<\/p>\n<p>She asked me whether I was afraid.<\/p>\n<p>I had laughed.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that too.<\/p>\n<p>The arrogance of it.<\/p>\n<p>I thought I was untouchable.<\/p>\n<p>I thought consequences were things that happened to careless people.<\/p>\n<p>Not me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after the call?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you know more than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Sarah said. \u201cI know what he told me. I want to know what you remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The memory came back in fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel leaving.<\/p>\n<p>The rain.<\/p>\n<p>A car parked outside.<\/p>\n<p>A message I deleted.<\/p>\n<p>A decision I made because it seemed easier than telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Then the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>A knock at my door.<\/p>\n<p>Two men standing outside.<\/p>\n<p>Questions.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>And the first time I realized that something I had done could affect another person&#39;s life.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah gave a small, humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part doesn&#39;t surprise me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told someone I hadn&#39;t seen Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she had left earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s face remained still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing blamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer sounded pathetic even to me.<\/p>\n<p>I had protected myself.<\/p>\n<p>That was the truth.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen a situation becoming dangerous and had immediately thought about how to keep my name out of it.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t thought about Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t thought about what she needed.<\/p>\n<p>I had thought about myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to her?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left Charleston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is becoming a familiar sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I deserved it.<\/p>\n<p>She walked to the sink and turned on the faucet.<\/p>\n<p>The water ran for several seconds before she turned it off again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did he keep that photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must have an idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>But saying it aloud made the past feel dangerously close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man at the caf\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was there that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could see the realization settle over her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why he knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was his connection to Rachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know, or you don&#39;t want to say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer was honest.<\/p>\n<p>For once, it was completely honest.<\/p>\n<p>She walked back to the counter and picked up the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says you abandoned someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t abandon her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t the same thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is to the person you leave behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no response.<\/p>\n<p>She placed the photograph down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man at the caf\u00e9 said something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Rachel wasn&#39;t the only person you lied about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou talked to him for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never asked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you would have to remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t amusement.<\/p>\n<p>It was disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone seems determined to make me solve a mystery about my own life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#39;t a mystery to the people you hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The words were deserved.<\/p>\n<p>But another thought had begun to take shape.<\/p>\n<p>If this man had been there that night, then perhaps he hadn&#39;t approached Sarah because he wanted her.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had approached her because he wanted something from me.<\/p>\n<p>Something older.<\/p>\n<p>Something I had thought was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s his name?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Michael.<\/p>\n<p>The name brought back another memory.<\/p>\n<p>Not from that night.<\/p>\n<p>From years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>A college apartment.<\/p>\n<p>A crowded kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Michael laughing with Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Michael warning me that I was making a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>I had ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>I had always been good at ignoring warnings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants you to tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe contacted him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer left me strangely empty.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years assuming Rachel belonged to the past.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wasn&#39;t even certain where she was.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael sent an address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached into the folder.<\/p>\n<p>A small card slid across the counter.<\/p>\n<p>An address was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the street immediately.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>It was near the old apartment.<\/p>\n<p>The place where the whole thing had begun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this isn&#39;t about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to tell her she was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Everything felt like it was about her now.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps she was right.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this was one thing I had to face without asking her to carry it for me.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you still be here when I come back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer hurt.<\/p>\n<p>But it was honest.<\/p>\n<p>And for once, I understood that honesty wasn&#39;t supposed to make me comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>It was supposed to make me accountable.<\/p>\n<p>I folded the card and put it in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah said one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you lie tomorrow, don&#39;t come back here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She wasn&#39;t threatening
