A serious one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the inheritance,\u201d David said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like you earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had worked most of her life. She had built a business, made investments, endured years when nobody believed her decisions would amount to anything, and spent the final part of her life making sure I would never have to depend on anyone.<\/p>\n<p>David knew that.<\/p>\n<p>Yet he spoke about the inheritance as though it were a prize sitting on the table for whoever reached it first.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the street was still blue with early morning light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are all three of you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That silence mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Jason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask David to come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Brenda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another shake.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>He stared back.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cWe\u2019re trying to help him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy asking me for one hundred and forty million dollars before sunrise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda&#39;s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re being emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m being careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David pulled out the chair and sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what belongs to you affects both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means I haven\u2019t agreed that my inheritance belongs to our household.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re married. You can&#39;t suddenly act like you\u2019re single because your mother died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not acting single.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen act like a wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>There had been a time when those words would have wounded me. I would have searched my memory for every way I had failed as a wife. Brenda defended him fiercely. David excused him constantly.
